K1 SSN After Marriage?

Hi there,

I know that the recommendation is that the beneficiary apply for the SSC prior to marriage, but I was wondering if anyone had success with getting it after marriage?

Due to my fiance wanting to spend the holidays with his family before moving here, and the timing of the weekend/flights he can get, we are looking at a really tight window (one business day) to get the SSC before our wedding. We thought about having him fill out the online application first to save time, as we saw someone else on VJ had success with it.

We are looking at options to still make it happen on that one day, in addition to a visit to the courthouse, but wanted to see if anyone had any recent success stories or ways to make it happen after if needed :)

Thank you in advance!

It is more about getting it done while there is a much of the 90 days left on the K1 stay as possible.  The SSN application will be in the same name as the K1 visa… So for someone not changing their last name after marriage , it is straight forward   But it should be a v v high priority yes

Okay! That makes me feel a lot better.

It would be much easier for us to get it done after - as holidays are hard to get time off of work and offices are closed etc etc. Definitely is a high priority for us and would be done within the first 2 weeks of him being here.

He wouldn’t be changing his name at all so sounds like it would be fine after. It would also be nice to only have to go to the SS office once for both of us, as I live pretty remote and will be changing my name after marriage (I’m the USC).

thank you~

Another thing, do not mention he's married. Some personnel think getting married voids the K1 and deny the SSN.

This is what I’ve heard 🙁

I’m trying to prepare best I can because I know for a fact my county courthouse has never dealt with this paperwork. I’m think the SS office people may be the same.

We did that.  My then fiancé entered and we spent two weeks finalizing our wedding plans, then a week later we went to the SSA (still more than two months left on her I94) and she had no issues getting her SSN.

Good Luck!

I got SSN after marriage in 2021.

Wedding was already arranged for two weeks after arrival in US. On first day here I called the SS office and they wouldn’t even allow me to book a place (during Covid) for two weeks due to outdated SAVE considerations.

So, I got an appointment exactly a week after I got married. 100% no issues.

With that being said, get the ball rolling ASAP as you only have a very small window on your I-94 to be issued the SSN as they will not issue one after day 76.

This all makes me feel so much better! We are going to be getting married a few days after he gets here so it leaves little to no time to get the SSC beforehand.

After the holidays it will be easier for me to get time off work to go to the SSA offices, so it will still be done within the first two weeks of him being here. We want to make sure he's able to get added to everything as soon as possible :)

Definitely understand what you are saying regarding getting time of at Christmas. I am hoping me and my fiancee can get mine sorted 2 weeks after travelling to the USA.
