For those of you who recently moved to the USA as a permanent resident, how long did it take for you to receive your green card in the mail?

I moved to the United States as a permanent resident just over five weeks ago. I paid my green card processing fee long before getting here. When I track my green card progress, it simply says that I’ve paid and I will receive it once I have entered the country and waited up to 90 days.

 

I appreciate I am of course not at the 90 day mark, but my passport is expiring and I want to renew it. I unfortunately cannot renew it as it has my visa in it which I need until my green card arrives.

 

Could I please ask, those of you who have made the move recently, how long did you have to wait?

It took 51 weeks for my wife to get her GC in hand.

Of course, it probably would have been faster if we paid the fee before she came. Sorry I cant remember the name of the fee.

1 month and 3 days after entry.

I renewed my passport (Sweden) prior to immigration, even though it doesn't expire until 2026, because I know it will be a hassle to do it in the States. I explained the situation to the police officer in Sweden and they let me keep the old passport with the Visa on.

Haynes, contact your Congressman's office.  The immigration liaison there might be able to grease the skids so that you get your green card expedited.

 

I recommend phoning the office.  There will be a routine form to fill out, giving your permission for the office to intercede on your behalf.  Look on the Congressman's website for that, and have it ready to submit when you call.

It can be 3 weeks to 9 months. No rhyme or reason. You haven’t listed your country ,. Z but it’s worth confirming with your country’s  consulate that you

 must return your current payout when applying to renew. I know Australia used to have this policy.. But they no longer do., they just cancel the old passport electronically. If you do have to send it with your application, you could request an ADIT stamp as evidence of your LPR status. It is a separate piece of paper that will have your details , photo and the USCIS stamp
