The IDF and Hezbollah entered a new, much more dangerous phase of the conflict in the North early Sunday morning, with around a hundred air force jets striking thousands of Hezbollah rocket attack platforms.  Hezbollah said it launched an attack on Israel in retaliation for the killing of Fuad Shukr in Beirut.

 

With Israeli intelligence observing that Hezbollah was about to launch its largest attack of the current war, including to the Tel Aviv and central Israel areas, the IDF, around 5:00 a.m., preemptively and independently struck targets where Hezbollah was on the verge of launching more deadly attacks on Israel.

 

Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant approved the preventative action against Hezbollah at IDF headquarters Saturday night and were bringing together the security cabinet around 7:00 a.m.  [...]

Hezbollah Flops; Netanyahu Warns

 

[...] Just how "pre-emptive" this strike was is a matter of semantics.  Hezbollah has been firing missiles at Israel since October 8 in an attempt to divert forces and resources from Gaza and Hamas.  That alone made the strike on Fuad Shukr a legitimate act against an aggressor; the humiliation of Israel's success is what prompted this retaliation, not the idea that Shukr's death was an escalation.

 

Still, Israel did a good job of essentially neutering Hezbollah in this instance, and this time all on its own, rather than as part of an alliance as during the attack from Iran.  That may be one reason why Hezbollah will call it a success regardless of the lack of any significant damage from their large-scale attack plans.  And perhaps also because they may realize that the Israelis have better intelligence on their operations than they realized.

Did Israel's Pre-Emptive Attack on Hezbollah Stop a Wider War?

 

Alan Dershowitz certainly thinks so.  And the signs coming not just from Beirut but also Tehran suggest that Israel has successfully reset the disincentives to war that the October 7 massacres undermined.

 

We'll get to Dersh's arguments in a moment.  Reporting today from the Times of Israel shows just how ineffective the retaliation attack from Hezbollah turned out to be.  They didn't hit any of their intended targets, even accounting for the destruction of the pre-emptive strike conducted by the IDF.  And yet Hassan Nasrallah seemed very eager on Sunday to declare himself satisfied that they had paid back Israel for the strike that took out Fuad Shukr:  [...]

Israel Launches Massive Raid on the West Bank

 

Israel launched a massive strike on West Bank targets on Tuesday, hitting "Islamic-Iranian terrorist infrastructure" and claiming that Iran was working to establish an "eastern front" against Israel," according to CNN.

 

"We must deal with the threat just as we deal with the terrorist infrastructure in Gaza, including the temporary evacuation of Palestinian residents and whatever steps are required," Foreign Minister Israel Katz wrote on social media.  "This is a war for all terms and purposes and we must win it."

 

IDF spokesperson Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani said in a briefing that Israel had identified "a systematic strategy in Iran" of smuggling weapons and explosives into the West Bank.

"Specifically, about Jenin and Tulkarm, we've seen over 150 shooting and explosive attacks originated from these areas alone over the past year," Shoshani said on Wednesday.  [...]
