Since my wife's N-400 is pending in San Diego, I tried to get a gage on how fast things are actually going here recently.  Searching VJ, some Facebook Groups and Reddit, I came up with 26 self reported cases that have already received interviews in San Diego in 2024.

Here are the stats on those 26 San Diego cases.  Number of days days from filing to interview in 2024.

Average time: 141 days
Median time: 133 days
Fastest time: 77 days
Slowest time: 230 days

# of cases in less than 4 months: 11
# of cases 4 to 6 months: 11
# of cases over 6 months: 4

These timelines are for interview letter issued date or interview date

Those are times from the filing date until the day of the actual interview.  It does not account for when interview letters were sent out or whether is was same day oath or additional time waiting for an oath ceremony date.

Well here's a one week update for San Diego specifically.  Nothing much has changed but I have located an additional seven San Diego cases self reported online so it adds some breadth to the sample size.  So now, based on 33 San diego N400 cases who have been scheduled for interviews so far in 2024, the statistics are as follows.

Time from filing to interview in San Diego in 2024.

Average time: 144 days
Median time: 131 days
Fastest time: 72 days
Slowest time: 245 days

# of cases in less than 4 months: 15
# of cases 4 to 6 months: 13
# of cases over 6 months: 5

more specifically

# of cases in less than 3 months: 3

# of cases 3 to 4 months: 12
# of cases 4 to 5 months: 6
# of cases 5 to 6 months: 7
# of cases 6 to 7 months: 2
# of cases 7 to 8 months: 3

Hey,

my interview was just scheduled today for Nov 5 in San Diego. My application date is July 3rd.

Does anyone know whether oath ceremonies will be held same day in San Diego or shortly after the interview date? I see in other threads that oath ceremonies can be a month after interview.

I am just trying to see what I should do about an international flight that I have January 2nd. When I initially saw that processing times are 7 months I thought I was fine to book this trip but now I’m worried if the oath ceremony isn’t close to the scheduling date whether I’d have enough time to get an American passport.

Right on schedule according to the statistics 😁  Hopefully we are just a few weeks after you.

Hmmm.  Naturalizing ON Election Day.  Maybe a last-ditch push to get out the vote? 😆  Per my research 'most' applicants are getting same day oath at San Diego lately.  Not everyone, but your odds seem relatively good of getting a same day oath if your case is straightforward.  Also, I have been checking appointment times for San Diego Passport office.  They have been pretty much wide open for expedited passport appointments in the short-term immediate future if you have booked travel within 14 days.  It should be no issue getting a passport in 2 or 3 days with the added benefit that I think you get to hang on to your Naturalization Certificate if you do an expedited appointment at the Passport Office.  You would probably be just fine for Jan 2.

Thanks for all the info. I’ve been eyeing the UCSD passport office appointments and it looks pretty open indeed. I wouldn’t qualify for the “14 days international travel plans” expedited scheduling but am hoping I could somehow make it case that there are the Christmas holidays right before which will make applications lag a bit, hence me trying to get the application in earlier. Their expedited processing times are currently 2-3 weeks to receive a passport. If I get my oath within a week of my interview I am not too worried, which seems to be the case for most San Diego interviews.

I realized that I don’t think I’d qualify for same day oath given that my appointment is at 2.30 p.m. 😔

UCSD is just an application acceptance point.  It is the actual US Dept of State Passport Office downtown that can literally get your passport overnight if you have travel in 14 days. https://passportappointment.travel.state.gov/  We will probably book a celebratory trip to Cancun whenever my wife naturalizes so we can take advantage of the overnight service.😁

Checking appointments just now, someone who took their oath today could get an appointment at the passport office Monday morning with delivery of the actual passport Tuesday.  San Diego Passport Office has been pretty much wide open lately.

Oh wow that’s crazy! Thanks for the info. Fingers crossed my oath ceremony will still be in November so I won’t be needing any of that.
