I just unexpectedly received my 10 year greencard in the mail after filing for ROC in January 2023. I submitted my N-400 on 9/4/24. I feel like this was such a waste of time on their part (and money on mine). I would've preferred they review the N-400 rather than the I-751. 🫠

They cannot approve N-400 without approving I-751 first. Congrats!

Is this actually true? I would think they just administratively close the I-751 after N-400 approval, same as they do with the I-131 and I-765 if the green card is approved before they are.

Also, really nice to just come here and see such fast timelines after having slogged through our I-129F during the pandemic.

Absolutely.

There's a reason that I-751s exist.

You can't naturalize before they have given a second look at the bona fides of your marriage.

Yes it is actually true. It does get decided and approved before N-400 can be approved. Sometimes it happens with combo interview, other times without. Many times you won't get 10 year GC, and many times online status for I-751 remains in pending state despite somebody naturalizing. But behind the scenes, I-751 was decided.

We filed online 18 Sep and on 19 Sep, notified of 7 Nov interview date but I think we're some kind of anomaly.

Finally,  last night, she started zinging the answers. A couple days ago I figured she'd probably pass but last night she was doing well.   We drove down to the Federal building in Cleveland and after a couple blocks pushing the stroller and getting through security,  we were at the office and checked in.  There were 8-10 folks there waiting but my wife was the first called.

I tried to go in with her but since there was no ROC, I wasn't allowed. The IO told my wife she could bring the baby but she left him with me.  Good thing because he is distracting to her.  IO said it would be 20-30 minutes but she was out under 18.  She answered all 6 questions but can only remember 5.  The answers are:

4 years

American Indians

Mississippi

The Flag

Republican and Democrat

As for the last question, she said it wasn't a name or date. That's kind of too bad because I told her if asked for a senator,  she'd get extra credit if she answered, Vice President Elect JD Vance.

She was asked why she hadn't worked in almost 2 years. (Pregnancy/ baby) and if we owed any back taxes.

Status is now Awaiting Oath Scheduling.  At the bottom of the status is a link to change address which I find interesting because if the scheduling tales too long, we may move. Hoping for the 16th.

Today is the day!
Smooth process for N400 interview.

Arrived and seated in the waiting area 10 mins before appt time. I waited for 15-20 minutes and got called by the IO. Started with an oath and handed over the appointment letter, passport, GC, and DL. Followed by civics tests. After that, he asked me a few questions on the N400 form, like your work, address(Yes, you do need to remember the company address even tho you work remotely or freelance), and duration of the work, if I have been abroad for over 6 months(he didn't ask how many times and how many days), and Yes and No questions.

After all that, he handed me the same day's oath ceremony paper. I headed downstairs for the oath ceremony, waited 30 minutes, and had the ceremony with around 15 other new citizens. That's it! They gave us the naturalization certificate on the spot and briefed us on how to apply for a passport.

I guess that's it for the USCIS journey. It's been a rollercoaster, but once you're on the other side, everything seems just fine.

Congrats
