Hi guys,

As the above title states, she is here! My wife came here on the K1 fiancé visa. She arrived on June 10, and we got married on July 31! What do we do next? She does not have a social security number.

Thanks

Thecorkman

This might be helpful:

Next steps would be SSN and Adjustment of Status.

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

You shouldn’t have waited this long to apply for SSN. Her window is almost over; the application needs to be filed and reviewed within 75 days of the 90. You can try and go on Monday but I’m not too hopeful she’ll get one.

Yeah you probably should have jumped on that Social Security card a lot quicker. We went down to the local SocSec office within the first week of my wife's arrival at the end of May last year. Just dedicate a full day and go down to your local office and get stuff done!

You were told back when you interviewed and also at the border upon arrival that she needs to file to Adjust her status within 90 days of entry. You only have a couple weeks left to make that happens. Study the guides available on this site regarding Adjustment of Status and filing for for her employment and travel documents, should she choose to.

Honestly no. I was not told this information at my interview, nor at the POE. I knew it because I wanted to know the whole process going in, and I am surprised the OP hasn't researched, but you do not always get all the information in the process.

What is the hurry? I checked the box for my social security number on I-485. Why does that need to be done within 75 days? I see that a lot but I am not really understanding why as you can request one when you file your AOS

Sure, you can request one but you won’t get one until you receive a GC or EAD. So you’re stuck without an SSN for potentially months. Meanwhile, there are many threads where employers refuse to add a spouse to a health insurance plan due to lack of SSN or can’t be added to a bank account without one. K1 applicants are eligible in the first 75 days because technically they can work up until 90 days (years and years ago they used to issue EADs at POE so you could work right after arriving and then apply for another EAD as part of I-485 where it was processed so fast they wouldn’t have a break in employment).

Ah ok, not a big issue for me but I can see how that may be an issue for other people.

Opening bank accounts, cards, getting added to lease, getting added to insurance... all of this requires SSN. I believe DMV asked for SSN when getting state ID / DL. I think majority of people actually need SSN as soon as possible. Start building that credit score too...

Yes that is why I said "I can see how that may be an issue for other people". We are financially well off and my husband owns our house. I do not need to work (although I might want to later) so I don't have to drive anywhere yet and I am fine being driven by my husband for a while. I am in a position where I can wait, that is why I said it's not a big issue for me.

That's a nice position to be in. Good luck with the process and keep us posted 😊
