Black box shows Brazil plane crashed 1 minute after pilots sensed trouble, local media says

 

SAO PAULO (Reuters) - Authorities investigating the Brazilian plane crash that killed all 62 on board last week now have the full transcript of the "black box" but its content did not immediately explain the cause of the accident, local TV station Globo said on Wednesday.


The transcript from the cockpit voice recorder shows the pilot and copilot noticed a steep loss of altitude about one minute before the crash [...]

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

The flight track data shows a loss of speed and altitude, immediately followed by a climb to regain the altitude loss. The it fell out of the sky.

 

Likely icing caused the loss of speed an altitude, and the climb caused the plane to stall. The stall cause the flat spin from which the flight crew could not recover.

 

The ATR family does not respond well to icing.

Then the conclusion might be the standard fallback, "Pilot Error," in this instance for failing to de-ice.

In this case, although the icing warning was given, the pilots may not have been aware of an issue with the plane. Most likely it was their attempt to regain altitude that precipitated the stall, further bleeding off airspeed until one wing stalled, throwing them into the spin.

 

it would be interesting to know whether there was anything on the cockpit voice recorder for the minute or so it took to from the initial problem to the final impact. I understand that there was no distress call, so the possibility the crew were incapacitated cannot be ruled out.
