Update DMV after citizenship Texas

Hi y'all,

 

I'm about to become a US citizen and I'm looking at the list of things I have to do after that. I saw that we have to update the DMV after naturalization.

How is that done in Texas?

What documents should I bring besides the naturalization certificate?

Do I get a new driver's license?

Under what category should I request the appointment online ?

Sounds like the naturalization certificate will work, but I would get a passport first, and use that instead.  I am not aware of needing to inform Texas DPS about a change in citizenship status unless you are renewing or changing your name on your state DL/ID.  Others may know better @Crazy Cat.

I cannot speak for Texas specifically, but we did SSA first, and then went to our DMV. They simply took a photocopy of the citizenship certificate, and then you could register to vote. A new DL was issued, but that was simply because he was due to update/renew one anyway.

Nothing of that sort.

The benefit of notifying DPS in Texas is that only US citizens can renew and change address online.  Green Card holders must physically go to DPS.  The problem is that physical appointments are not always easy to get.  Right now, wife's DL expires in 2 weeks.  The earliest appointment I could get is Oct 23rd (i scheduled it 2 weeks ago).

FYI-  Wife has already had jury duty a couple weeks ago.  I think they got her name from Dallas County voter registration info.

Wife received her Texas driver's license in 2017, a couple months after arriving via a CR-1.  She received a full, non-restricted DL which expires this month on her birthday.  It has no "limited term" statement.

About a week after you become a citizen, make appointment iwth SS office,  once that is done,  take your naturalization certificate, you go to DPS to show them your status change, so they remove the LPR on your license record.

We are doing that today for my husband,  SS, and then ask how long till DPS see's the status change.  He already received his passport,  took 3 weeks for passport processing.
