Wait times for US Embassy in Lima after interview

Hi there.

My wife had her interview for the IR-1/2 visa for herself and my stepdaughter on August 5 and the consular officer told us that everything looked good and that he would be keeping the passports and do a couple of final administrative things before processing them. We did not receive a refusal nor were any documents requested. We took this as an approval pending any last second security checks.

Assuming we are correct, does anyone have any experience with how long it takes to get the passports back from the US embassy with the visas?

For reference, here's my timeline:

  1. USCIS Application: June 2021
  2. USCIS Approval Notice: October 2021
  3. NVC Application: May 2024 (yes, really, I just keep resetting the clock once a year)
  4. NVC Documentarily Qualified: June 2024 (at this point I requested an Expedite, which was granted)
  5. US Embassy Interview Scheduled July 2024
  6. Actual Interview August 5, 2024
  7. Passports with visas returned: TBD
  8. Travel to US: TBD

  • 1 month later...

Hi James,

Wanted to ask if since your case was granted expedite that is why the NVC scheduled your interview 1 month later? I made a petition for my dad and it got approved June 2024 and have yet to hear anything for his schedule interview. not sure how long are the wait times for an interview for the Lima Embassy.

Thanks!

Yes, we asked the NVC and the Embassy specifically for an accelerated date and the NVC spoke with Lima. We ended up getting what we needed as a result of that. Honestly, I was very surprised the expedite request was granted at all, but it worked out great. I made sure to explain the unique circumstances of my family's case that required the urgency and they agreed and didn't ask us about it at all during the interview.

We got the passports back a week after the interview and were in the USA before the end of August.

I realize I had a strange journey, but it worked out for the best.
