Begining the Naturalisation process (form N-400) but didn't sign up for Selective Services?

Hello,

My husband came over on a K1 visa, we were married, then he did his adjustment of status and now he has his green card. We are ready to do the form N-400 online but we got to the section asking about signing up for Selective Services. We tried verifying his SSN online with the Selective Services website but it cannot find him registered. I honestly cannot remember if we did or didn't sign up, we certainly weren't trying to NOT sign up but so far on the immigration journey we never saw anything prompting us directly or requiring him to sign up. I thought I remembered him signing something about the draft when he got his drivers license at the DMV? But honestly it is all a blur now. And now we are panicked because on the SS website it says it is a felony if you haven't signed up before 26. He is 27 and has been here since he was 21. Has anyone had any experience with this?

Any feedback would be much appreciated. Thank you!

I think selective service registration is part of AOS form or DS-260. You just may need to get in touch with selective service in person to verify if he has been registered - sometimes there are glitches with online databases.

He may have been registered before he had social security number. The same thing happened to my husband. After we called, they were able to find him in the system and sent us a letter showing he registered years ago when he was 19 years old.

I do not remember it being an automatic thing, you certainly do not need a SSN.

Otherwise it is 5 years GMK. Unless you can argue your way past it.

Thank you everyone. I found out to that in the state of NC, in order to get a drivers license it is required by law to sign up for Selective Services. He has a license, and we vaguely remember signing up at the DMV. So I'll call SS today. Thanks again!

This is what they say:

Most men who are U.S. and non-U.S. citizens between 18 to 25 years old are required by law to register. Exemptions and additional information are available on the Selective Service System website.

Note: NCDMV cannot issue licenses or IDs to individuals not registered, as required by law, with the Selective Service System.

They do not say they check each application. they may but that would surprise me, obviously there are people who qualify for a DL in that age and gender category but do not need to register.
