My husband already filed our I-130 and we decided to file it with my married surname (husband's surname). He added my maiden name in "other names used". We knew that I could update my name on passport during the wait period. We also knew CR1 Visa / LPR are issued to the name on the passport at the time of interview, as long as that name was mentioned in form I-130.

However, after applying for an updated passport we discovered that my country laws only allow to ADD husband's surname to the maiden name, but not REPLACE it.
To replace it, apparently we have to go through a much lengthier process of changing citizenship card, re-apply for passport, repay fees, update all other civil documents, etc.

So my new passport has my maiden name as a middle name, and husband's surname. But this three part name (given + maiden + married) was not mentioned in "other names used" in form I-130.

Will this be a problem? We are okay with the maiden name being included in LPR if it will not cause issues, as the alternative is a big hassle.

Would appreciate if anyone could share similar experiences with surname change / addition.

Should not be an issue.  You can update it when you fill out the DS260, and at the interview.

Good Luck!

Yes, you can change the passport to match the I-130, or just use the passport name from NVC stage forward.  Your choice.

Hey confused couple,

im curious how you were able to add your husbands name in your passport without changing your citizenship card?

Im in the boat where we are trying to change wife’s (nepali) passport surname so when she gets green card it has my(american) surname. We are thinking we have to change her citizenship but if we can change her passport without having to go through the seemingly impossible -everyone we ask tells us she can’t change her name to mine since i’m bideshi- process of changing the citizenship then that’s preferable.

Please offer a word of advice. I leave nepal in two days and we’ve spent the last few weeks jumping through hoop after hoop to get married and get it registered.

Best,

Also confused couple
