I'm looking into getting a bank account in our names. My bank (bank of america) told me that my husband would need to come in and sign papers and show his I.D...so of course this is not possible due to him still being in Jordan. I remember seeing a Citibank in Jordan so I emailed Citibank in USA regarding opening an account.

This was their reply-

Thank you for your message regarding opening a joint

account. If your husband is not in the same area as you are

the both of you can call in and open an account over the

phone. It can be a confernece call between you two and

Citibank.

Has any of you ever done this before? If you have any added info or have done this please share... Thanks!

We just recently opened a joint account with Washington Mutual. I remember someone on VJ saying that they added their S.O. while they were waiting but I can't remember the bank. Maybe if you try a seach you will find the post.

VJ Hours - I am available M-F from 10am - 5pm PST. I will occasionaly put in some OT for a fairly good poo slinging thread or a donut.

My bank said they could add him now and I could give them his SSN when he had it. I haven't done it yet but I should!

Oh ok thanks..i will search more on this.. but I hope if anyone else reads this they will post info and banks that do allow you to open an account in USA while spouse is in Jordan..and what is required. I also think it would be good for my husband to include these documents of joint bank account to K-3 interview in Jordan.

I would think it varies bank to bank. Larger banks, possibly ones with branches all over the US and aboard would be more accomdating then small town ones. I had Chase bank personally, where I have several accounts. I have one account checking with a debit Visa that I added my mother onto (who lives aboard) She was on there when I opened the account, but with a notarized letter of explaination to my bank I had no problem. But I would think with a spouse it would be much easier to obtain a joint account or additional cards.

It is really hard to get your husband on a joint account w/o him being here. I dont know if there is a way to do it. I think you will have to wait until he is here.

All banks have different policies. My bank would not allow my husband without having his EAD card and was told when he was issued his SS# to give it to the bank otherwise they would drop him after 60 days. That is what we did.

You must be approved for EAD or AOS before you can get a SS#.

actually that is not quite true there are 2 options 1)you need only be in the SAVE system which takes about 2-3 weeks after entry and then you can get a ssn relatively easily contingent on city (we are in a metro area so they were familiar w/ k-1's and the rules) or 2) you can apply immediately but it takes longer from what i understand since then the SSA will have to contact DHS to get authorization to provide an ssn. the only difference i am told is whether or not your ss card is stamped reagarding your work authorisation

we were able to open a joint checking account w/ no ssn just two forms of id, the passport and a cc. we were asked to provide the ssn as soon as it arrives (we took the confirmation letter for good measure). this was wells fargo and other than that they just insisted that i be the primary account holder since i am the USC.

I was talking about K3 not K1. K3s have to wait until EAD or AOS approval. My husband was in the system but was unable to apply for a SS# because he's here on K3. This was according to the ppl at the SS office.

my husband is here on K3 and when we went to SS office- the first words out of the lady's mouth- i need to see your visa- and said- i see, your're here on K3, I will need to see your EAD card otherwise you will have to come back when you get it. We DO NOT issue SS# to K3 holders without EAD card. Good thing my husband had his EAD card- we did not have to come back.

Your husband came here on K1, mine came on K3. There's a big difference. We went to the SS office 3 weeks after he got here and they told him he couldn't get one until he was approved for either EAD or AOS. Like I said before, he was in the system but he couldn't be issued a SS# yet because of EAD and AOS.

Thank you! Ppl need to understand that K1s and K3s are very different visas.

Why the heck do the K1's get it so easy after they get here??? They get to get a temp EAD stamp good for 90 days upon arrival and now they can get their SS number quicker too? Gawd if I knew then what I know now.
