How to track green card creation for immigrant visa?

I thought USCIS petitions were unnecessary convoluted, but it seems that after petition it is even more hairy.

So, my mom has IR-5 visa and is about to come to the US. We're trying to figure out how to check the status of her case and preparation of her green card.

  • is it possible to see it while logged in to https://my.uscis.gov/? Right now when she is logged in under her account it's empty, there is no case visible.
  • USCIS says that https://my.uscis.gov/ is the right place to update your mailing address for green card - but how? can't find an option.
  • There is a separate website called USCIS Case status https://egov.uscis.gov/. But it's unclear which Receipt number should be entered here. We tried entering NVC case number and it just says "The receipt number entered is invalid, please try again."

We tried paying the USCIS immigration fee using A-number (registration number from the visa) and DOS-number (IV-number from the visa), money got charged, but we got no clarity that the payment was applied to correct case. Is there a way to check that? Thank you

When you pay the $235 immigrant fee you will receive a receipt e-mail from pay.gov.  The e-mail will have a new IOExxxx case number.  This is not the same one as the I-130.  You can track the green card status with the new IOE number on https://egov.uscis.gov/.  If you pay the immigrant fee while logged in to her USCIS account the case 'might' be visible there some time after she enters.

thank you. When I'm tracking on the new IOE payment receipt, the status is "Immigrant Visa Fee Payment Received". When should I expect it to be updated and what's the next status? anything like "green card is being produced"?

Yes, exactly that. Can take up to 90 days from entry to the US for it to be produced. You'll then get tracking details too once it's been mailed.

Her endorsed visa acts as a temporary green card for the first year, she doesn't need the physical card until that year has passed.

It won't update until about a week or two before you actually receive the card.  Then it will literally say "Card is being produced".😀

If you are concerned whether the $235 immigrant fee was credited correctly and the payment applied to your mom's case just try imputing her A-Number and DOS Case Number again as if you would try to pay a second time.

When you click "next" you will get an error message.

"The USCIS Immigrant Fee has already been paid for this person. If this person has not received their Green Card yet, create a USCIS Online Account to verify or update their mailing address."

You can do that without committing to anything or entering payment information again.  It confirms that the payment is correctly applied, everything is fine and the only reason you are still waiting is because USCIS is slow..
