The requirements are the same whether filing online or not.

You can file 4 years and 1 day from the day you returned from the trip lasting over 6 months. If this is the only issue, did I just save you attorney fees?

But what if im married to citizen and have 3 citizen kids.

Then 3 years from the date you returned from the long trip.

The reason why I'm saying this, is because for 3 year rule you'd need to prove there was no break of marital union and no break in continuous residency.

If you have $$ - Wildes & Weinberg. Used them last year (also had used them 25 years ago, for my green card). They are thorough + very responsive - but not cheap at all (you have to decide whether you prefer to eat well, or sleep well).

Btw I don't mean to sound like they are perfect - they are not (in fact they twice pissed me off. But overall...).

I do not gives you any built-in advantage over someone without kids.

 

If you sense you have a difficult case -- or simply like the surety of legal advice (and really, when it comes to USCIS, who could blame you?) -- I would start with the link posted above. I would definitely check the statutory requirements first and familiarize yourself with them, because a lot of them can't be overcome/bypassed, lawyer or no lawyer.

 

Also, as someone who truly believes in the overall value of legal representation in life, I will state that naturalization is he one step that DYI is quite possible when the case is starightforward.
