Kroger and Albertson's released the list of stores the companies plan to sell Tuesday, should a merger between the grocery giants be approved by regulators.

The list outlines the 579 stores that will be transferred from the merging companies to C&S Wholesale Grocers along with six distribution centers and one dairy plant.  [...]

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

After reading the rationales here, please comment.  Would YOU approve or deny this merger?  I lean toward denial.

FTC Tries to Block $25 Billion Grocery Chain Merger

 

[...] In 2022, Kroger announced plans to buy Albertsons, another large competitor.  The deal would merge the nation's second and fourth-largest grocery chains while still leaving them miles behind Walmart, the top chain in the country.  Naturally, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is trying to block the merger, and states are getting involved as well.


"The FTC and several states filed lawsuits to block the merger, arguing that it would lead to higher grocery prices for consumers while reducing the bargaining power of unionized workers in the industry," reports Fox Business.  These suits come even as both companies have pledged to lower prices and spin off some stores to a smaller company.  [...]

Yes, my local Pavilions I go to multiple times a week is on there. It's a fantastic supermarket, with a massive Kosher section (including frozen and chiller aisles, not common outside of specifically Kosher supermarkets). For this reason it's a community resource, so I hope that stays in place for my neighbors.

Around my parts, we have a very few Randalls stores, I think owned by Albertsons.  They need to stay open.  I don't see any conflicts with Kroger locations, and there are so few Randalls anyway that it probably wouldn't matter.
