I've brought back sweets, honey and other similar products from Morocco. The honey may need to be packed in the check in luggage.

1. Food better be packed in nice store containers or even better store bought. (I brought pickled olives packed in many bags not in a jar and they were fine).

2. Declare everything!!!!

3. The only things not allowed would be raw meat, fish, fruit and stuff like that. Plus other illegal things but I'm sure you're not bringing something like that.

4. No toothpaste or oils in carry on - they have to be in your luggage or they'd take them away from you before you get on the plane.

If you have any more questions, check RAM's site or whatever airline you're flying with. You can also ask me, I traveled back in May and managed to bring back lots of goodies!

Mabrook again. I bet you are so excited!

I think you can bring it as long as it is packed in your suitcase. I don't think they will allow it in a handbag with all the new security procedures at the airports. And if you have to pack honey be very careful that it doesnt break or spill in your suitcase.

VJ Hours - I am available M-F from 10am - 5pm PST. I will occasionaly put in some OT for a fairly good poo slinging thread or a donut.

Mabrouk on your approval of your visa... Welcome to America (soon) Generally customs will allow you to bring sweets in your hand bag as long as there is no liquid. And packing them into your suitcases (2) is also fine. I am kinda iffy on the honey, since I assume it is local honey not commerical. Customs tends to be warey of "organic" non-commerical products such as honey. I know back in the day people were allowed to bring wine and olive oil over and meats... but nowadays a definate no-no. I *tried* to bring some homemade makroud, vermicell (I made myself LOL), jar of fresh apricot preserves, couscous and baklava over last trip ... but unforuntately they throw it all away. I was crushed. But luckily was not fined. :( I have been fined before. It sux.

I know you can buy many honey varieties in the US, so I would just forego the honey. Bring some delicious sweets... some Cote d'Or chocolates.... so delicious!

I brought back bags of homemade sweets from the medina on both of my trips to Morocco. I listed them as candies on my customs forms and was not bothered about it. Although, I would advise to pack them in your luggage in several layers of plastic to avoid a mess. And try to bring store-bought items that are still sealed in case they do ask you to open your goodies.

And Mabrouk, welcome to The States, we're all happy for you and glad to have you :)

When my MIL came the first time after we were married, she actually packed a mint plant from their garden that had originally come from Gaza. I still shake my head in disbelief about that!

We have the CUTEST beagles who sniff around as we collect our bags here in Houston. They were so cute I forgot about the blood oranges I had in my carry on....guess they were looking for something else though

I love my french vanilla cream in my coffee, so I froze it and took it with me on the plane. Not the best way to handle it though. I must not have packed it good because when I opened my suitcase the tupperware had actually split open and every piece of clothing was drenched. I did find it quite amusing that my husband (fiance at the time) washed all of my underwear by hand because he was afraid of what his mom would think about thong underwear. Silly man.....after getting to know her I think she would have held it up to her and danced around the house for everyone to see.

My point is to make sure you cushion it well!

'Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming 'WOO HOO, What a Ride'

Last summer when we came back from Morocco we were able to bring back EVERYTHING, including lots of food (homemade cookies, maybe 4 kilos of olives, some preserved lemons, harissa, even some clarified butter/ghee/I can't think of the Arabic name for it).

This spring, however, immigration threw away ALL of Simo's food--even his mother's homemade cookies!

What was the difference? Last summer I put the stuff in MY bags (not Simo's)--I did have to beg, but the JFK security people seemed to respond well to a white American woman.

This spring, Simo was by himself. He was held in immigration for several hours and they repeatedly interviewed him in a not-so-nice way. Then the guy spitefully threw away all of his food items. He went through US immigration at the Toronto airport--I'm not sure why they were so rude (maybe they were bored?), but he almost missed his plane, they didn't get his luggage onto his flight, and he arrived home a frazzled mess.

My conclusion: pack any food items in your checked luggage, but don't pack anything that might upset you if they confiscate it at customs or immigration.

Bon voyage!
