Spouse came here on K1, going through ROC pending right now. Wants to get the learner's permit for learning to drive. Can she be added to my existing car insurance? Do we need to get new insurance for her? What are the legal requirements and procedures. We are in michigan, if anyone has any specific personal experience. Thank you for your help.

I'm not sure about Michigan, but I've been to at least 3 other states where you can just call your insurance agent to add any driver to your insurance policy.

Make sure she first has an SSN already since I think the insurance company would need that.

If she doesn't already have one, she can get a state REAL ID provided she has 2 proofs of residence.

Learner's permit usually comes after taking the written test.

Then, you can add the learner's permit driver to your insurance.

Also, remember to fill out your Timeline to contribute to the VJ stats. Thanks.

Insurance generally follows the car and not the driver, but there can be some insurances that limit permissive use clauses and require the driver to be listed on the owner's policy. Call and speak to your insurance provider. https://www.marketwatch.com/guides/insurance-services/does-car-insurance-follow-the-vehicle-or-driver/

For my state as a new driver in the US, my husband was allowed to use my dad's old vehicle which is under his insurance. We were struck by a driver that was using an insured vehicle, and was using it without the owner's authorization. The owner's insurance paid out damages for the car and for injuries. For regulations involving obtaining a learners permit, it will depend on if your spouse has ever driven in their own country with a license before? In these cases, you can often skip the learning process and move straight to testing. If they have never driven before, then you'd be starting from scratch. Make sure when the 10yr green card is received , or when/if citizenship you return to the DMV to update your status.

Here in California with GEICO I just added my wife online.  Since I did not add a second vehicle at the time and still had myself as the primary driver it did not impact my rate at all.   I was instantly able to print new insurance cards listing both of as named drivers.
