And Cato is a conservative (in the mold of the Rockefeller Republicans) think tank. They produce reliable work. It's not their fault the party's been taken over.

Which makes it comical that any Republican today can arrogantly point the finger at the Democrats as 'tax and spend' liberals.

Tell me that again when Hillary triples your taxes to pay for her Hillarycare and at the same time leaves the troops in Iraq. Although I agree that the the reps in congress have lost their way. That is why I want a clean sweep. Throw out everyone in congress dem and rep alike and put in a fresh crop of real conservitives with Thompson or Newt as president. Then the country will be heading in the right direction.

Hillary, like her husband will be a lot more fiscally conservative than that chimp we have in office right now...I guarantee you that.

Fred Thompson on the Move

By Marie Horrigan Wed Aug 8, 5:55 PM ET

With a re-vamped Web site, a new “Weekly Update” e-mail to supporters, and the announcement of top campaign hires, the still-unofficial presidential campaign of actor and former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson edges ever closer to officialdom this week.

As part of the flurry of activity, Thompson informed supporters he was taking the month of August to travel around the country and speak with voters. “It’s not quite two-a-days, but I think we’re building some real momentum. To keep that momentum, we’re shifting into higher gear,” Thompson wrote in his inaugural e-mail update, released Tuesday,

On Wednesday, the campaign announced that Bill Lacy, a former Reagan White House political aide, had joined as chairman of “Friends of Fred Thompson.” Lacey worked on the presidential campaigns of Reagan, President George H.W. Bush and former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole, and also worked on Thompson’s 2004 Senate run.

“As I move toward a decision on whether to run for president, I am confident he will take our operations to the next level,” Thompson said in a statement.

The campaign also named Randy Enwright national political director of the “testing the waters” campaign. Enwright, a Florida native, has served as executive director for the state GOP in Florida and Iowa and served as political director of the Missouri Republican Party, in addition to work on campaigns for all three Bushs — presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, as well as Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.

Linda Rozett, a spokeswoman for Friends of Fred Thompson, wouldn’t give a date for an announcement, but many observers expect Thompson to make his run official in early September.

Newt: Ask me in October

From NBC's Joel Seidman

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said today that he will decide by the end of October whether he will enter the presidential race.

On NBC's "Today” this morning, Gingrich said, "There will be a yes or no by the end of October" and he reiterated that at the National Press Club in DC.

You are sadly misguided in your fantasy election. Debating with your half truths & skewed results means nothing to me. I am not scared of either one in the least. I find it laughable actually that you think I would be scared as neither is a threat in any way.

And Newt already thinks Hillary will win, remember?

"The odds are fairly significant that the left will win next year," Gingrich said to a group of business leaders. "My personal bet is that it'll be a Clinton-Obama ticket. I think they have a very high likelihood of winning."

Democratic strategist Donna Brazile, an ABC News consultant, said, "While the Republicans find it interesting to hook up the top two candidates, first they have to secure the nomination then they have to look around to see how they are going get to 270. It is much too early to be talking about this." Brazile added, "I'm not surprised they are spending their daylight hours focusing on the strength of both Clinton and Obama."

If Newt's on the record saying we're losing in Iraq, you can bet he's not planning a run for President.

My fantasy election huh? First you try and tell me that "will definitely vote against Clinton" and "never vote for Clinton" are not the same thing. Then you say that going into an election with a 50% disapproval rate isn't a handicap. And now you tell me that Thompson and Newt are not running. Seems to me your the one in fantasy land here. When shown that you have made totally untrue statements you then revert to quoting something that Newt as if it somehow cancels out the crazy things you have been saying. You need help lady.

:bonk:

Newsflash!

As of today, August 9, 2007, Newt & Thompson ARE NOT candidates for the 2008 Presidential election.

Then you say that going into an election with a 50% disapproval rate isn't a handicap.

Maybe the 3rd time is the charm:...

and to your earlier point that 50% against can't surmount the odds & win:

Absent a major third party candidate, it is hard to envision Clinton attracting less than 45% of the vote. It is equally difficult to envision her reaching the 50% threshold barring a total collapse of the Republican campaign. That could result in a situation where fringe third party candidates determine the outcome with candidates from the left hurting the Democrats and candidates from the right hurting the GOP. It might also result in a President being elected with less than 50% of the vote for the 4th time in the last five elections.

Never is a pointless word in election polls., esp one over a year out - AND one without 2 (major) party candidates!!!! Opinions change EVERY SINGLE DAY until November 2008. Hillary may F it up before then, Newt may join the race, etc, etc. THINGS CHANGE.
