Got my "interview scheduled for Jan 21, 2025 today!

Filed July 11th

Did Bio july 29th

The problem I'm having is we're making a PCS military move cross country about the 1st week in January so this is going to mess up our move timeline! I may have to stay back and fly out after. I filled married to USC. I don't want to do a change of address and reschedule because that means more waiting and waiting!!

Congratulations.  Having an upcoming PCS may be grounds for an expedited interview.  USCIS has a military helpline that is supposed to offer just that type of assistance for military families.  877-CIS-4MIL (877-247-4645) https://www.uscis.gov/military/military-help-line  It would probably at least be worth a call to see if they could help getting the date moved up a bit.

Hey everyone!
Got my interview yesterday. To my surprise it was virtual.

5 years rule, LA.

All in all, very friendly but still formal, with a lot of small talk to fill the silence while the officer was preparing for every section.

Showed my docs through the webcam. Then the officer swore me in, civic questions, and reading and writing on iPad.

Then we went through the application.

Most of the questions were asked like “where? and since when?” and we got almost through the entire application.

The officer asked me for my SSN! lol (I didn’t bring it but I remember the last 4 digits, that was enough)

And then there were around 15-20 yes/no questions.

I have a name change, the officer suggested leaving a name with no change to have the same-day oath, but I declined.

We confirmed what I want to change and he said the next ceremony with a judge will be probably in March in one of 3 locations (Pasadena, Anaheim, and Riverside)

Then all signed, the officer printed out the confirmation and I was escorted out.

And today I got my Oath scheduled for 12/17.

LA has ceremonies with a judge every 3 months only but I got very lucky 'cause the next one is on 12/17 (if anyone is interested courts are publishing the dates - e.g. https://www.cacd.uscourts.gov/clerk-services/naturalization-ceremony-locations-and-schedule).

The next one after that will be indeed in March.

About updating Social Security and applying for US passport…

I have my oath ceremony today.

After the oath, USCIS is giving the chance to apply for US passport at USCIS. I have all my documents ready.

My question…to apply for US passport, I need to give them the naturalization certificate as proof for citizenship document. And it may take multiple weeks to get my passport and naturalization certificate back.

Social Security office will need the same document to update my record to citizen.

If I update Social Security sometime in 2025, would this possibly a problem when I’m filing my taxes for 2024?

which one should I prioritize?

Hello! Really hoping to get some insight on my situation. My husband and I applied for naturalization in July and we tried to submit our N-400 application forms and payment together so we could possibly go through the process together. We were both scheduled for  Biometrics on the same day in August and did that together. On November 5 I got an email saying I had been scheduled for an interview but my husband didn’t get his. About a couple of hours later I got another email saying my interview had been cancelled or descheduled and I would be informed when a new date has been scheduled or a decision is made on my case. Last week  my husband got an email saying his interview had been scheduled for January but mine has not been rescheduled. What’s puzzling is that bow, when I check my progress on my account it shows step 3, which is the interview process as scheduled and completed and that I’m on step 4, which is waiting for case decision. My case status still shows that my interview was cancelled or descheduled and that I will be contacted if that changes. I’m so confused as to what is going on and have not been able to talk to someone at USCIS for possible explanation. Can anyone help with what could be going on? Thanks

It's pretty normal to have interviews on different days. Each case is unique. Even if you filed together, it's still two separate petitions, potentially with different adjudicators.

You can safely ignore MyProgress tab. It's largely inaccurate in 99% of cases. It doesn't have any legal binding, doesn't provide any real estimate.

I'd just wait for the interview to be schedules. Let your husband go through it, and hopefully you'll get update soon too. You filed in July 2024? You're still well within normal processing times. If a 1.5 years goes by, then I'd start worrying.

Why would we need to update SSA records to citizen ?
What does it change if we don't ?
I never heard of people even doing it, but I feel like I am missing something.

If you want to get benefits only available to US citizens, you should update it. Also, when performing I-9 verification, employer would rely on information about your status from SSA.

Even USCIS tells you to do it: https://www.uscis.gov/citizenship-resource-center/new-us-citizens

It is to get rid of the sentence "Valid for work only with DHS Authorization Only"... With this sentence, many employers can deny you employment but I dont know if that is true...

No, you can get rid of this wording even as conditional GC holder. Of course, if your SS card shows it after naturalization, you'd want to remove it. But this can be done without becoming citizen.

I don't have that restriction on my SSN card. But I did get a new SSN card just recently based on my 10 y permanent green card.
Is there any difference between updating SSN card based on a 10 y GC vs as a citizen ? Should I do it again when I get citizenship ?

Another question friends - San Antonio FO does not offer same day oath ceremony. My interview is next week ok 12/16. Am I allowed to request oath to be schedule in March 2025 or after ? Or office just places you in line for a next available oath ceremony and I am not allowed to request it to be in/after specific month ?
Asking because I have multiple trips scheduled for Jan/Feb 2025 and I am afraid oath might land on a date when I am not in the US. How should I go about it ?

How do you know for sure they don't offer same day oath ceremony. What time is your interview? For my wife, San Antonio office didn't do same day oath (her interview was at 12:30pm) but she was called for oath the next week.
