Jury Duty!!!!!!!

Today, wife received a summons for jury duty in Dallas County, Texas.  My research shows that Dallas County has a "one day/one trial" system.  If she is not selected for a court by 4:30pm on her first day of service, she will be dismissed.  This is very different from my experience (in another state) about 20 years ago.  I seem to remember being on standby for 6 months. Anyway, this will be an experience for my wife, the new citizen.

Did your wife register to vote after her naturalization?

In the past, rumors had it that the jury duty register was tied to the voters registration.

My wife was also selected for jury duty several months ago.  Here in MI we are scheduled for a date, and the day before we call in or check online and if they need us, we are to report the next day.  In my wife's case, she was dismissed and never had to go.

Yes. That is how they select jury pools here in Dallas county.  She registered to vote the same day as her oath ceremony in early 2023.

Not in California, here they grab random names from the DMV registry. So basically anybody who has a state ID and /or driver license can get the jury duty letter (hence why so many greencard holders get it too, despite not being able to vote - I think I got the letter 2 or 3 times as an LPR). 

I have never registered to vote and has been called a few times both before and after becoming a citizen (almost yearly?). Here in CA you have one week where you need to report to the website (or by phone) every single day for that entire week. If you're not getting called for an interview during that week, it counts as if you completed your jury duty and can't be called again in another 12 months.

Same here in San Diego. My wife has been called twice for jury duty already since she arrived.  Luckily, easily dismissed online by notifying them she isn't a citizen.

 

The more annoying part is that California keeps sending her voter registration forms.  We traced that to when she first arrived we purchased her health insurance through the state "coveredcalifornia" web site.  Even though we had no subsidies and paid full price for the insurance, they got all her info and even with California having full disclosure that she is a green card holder they still keep sending her voter registration forms.

That sounds annoying, but as long as she doesn't register to vote until she is a citizen, she's fine. 

I have my Blue Shield insurance through Cover California as well, but have never received any letters or cards about voter registration.

Yea, she is smart enough to ignore the voter registration solicitations so it is no big deal.   But it is definitely annoying since it is recurrent and derives from a government agency that has been formally notified of her green card status.

Is there any wonder why some have questions about voter fraud, especially when some groups are against voter ID.

And to add to this, I see dems voted against a bill that would require verification of US citizenship to vote in federal elections.
