Just wondering how far her pension will go in the US.

Not enough

Have you talked to her how she will afford this?

Not yet but I will talk to her about it

I think a lot of new US Citizens are sponsoring parents just because they can. More thought should be put into whether this is a good idea for all involved. Healthcare cost is a huge consideration. Also, elderly parent often has bigger support system in their home country. The only people I saw adjust well are the once with only child that immigrated to US.

I can't even imagine bringing my Mom here. Three of my siblings reside near her as well as extended family.

Our experience for what it is worth

MIL came on tourist visa to see if she may want us to apply for the CR1

1.  very homesick as 5 other sons and her grandchildren

2.  she also missed the Moroc festivals and spent much of her time on cell talking to people back home which at times was hampered by the time difference.

3.  she was diabetic and cost of her 2 medicines were over $600 a month with trips to US drs for the prescriptions to be written

4.  she was ill when here and we thought sugar level as that was off but turned out to be appendictis and when home needed surgery / would have cost a pretty penny here but only $1000 back home.  At present Adil is in Moroc getting laser surgery for her to save 1 eye (from the diabetes)

5.  Health care costs vary by state/  u can get lower premium packages but they carry the huge deductables

KFF reported the average 2023 deductible for marketplace plans sold via HealthCare.gov, (combined for medical and prescription drugs) by metal rating: $7,481 for Bronze plans, $4,890 for Silver plans, $1,650 for Gold plans, and $45 for Platinum plans.

6.  and the 2 things needed by seniors (eye and dental )are not covered  under Affordable Health Care

The Affordable Care Act does leave two forms of insurance for adults out of its provisions — vision insurance and dental coverage.

7. We took her to visit 8 states from city of chicago to Atlantic Beach in NC but it wasn't as good as her home, family and friends

And we have numerous Muslim community here and some invited her to dinner but not as good as home

Oh my that’s a lot to consider, I don’t know why healthcare in the US is so expensive. Maybe if I win the lottery it’ll change everything lol but everything you all have said here are very important to think twice before making a decision. And even if I apply her for a tourist visa she probably not gonna get approved because of her financial situations in the Philippines. I don’t know, maybe I’ll just explain to her everything she needs to know about here.

Greetings!

1. Documents wise, just gather all papers like both of your birth certificate etc.

2. Way back 2010. I had the same serious thoughts, especially when it comes to health insurance. That time it was very fast; it only took six months including her interview. She visited a lot of her friends and a lot of relatives; she actually traveled a lot in many states. At that time, I kept checking for health quotations and I remembered, the cheapest quotation with her was $595 monthly for BCBS. I was very nervous, but this is USA and there are a lot of opportunities and no age limit for some job, she hated staying with us as she thinks that I won't allow her to work as most of her friends had/have a decent job and was paid good. She and three other friends were so board staying in their children. They took a home health class for a week, got their certificates and worked, 10 years later they had their pension and Medicare kicks in when they need it.

3. If you are not ready start gathering papers etc. if not, file the petition. Also, check health status etc.

4. Her insurance from her pay and company helps. So, I was so happy.

I know some will say why work at her age? but she does not like to waste a single day knowing a job is paid good and very easy.

So, Goodluck?

NG

We know she does not work now.

No suggestion she wants to move to the US to do so.

Using round numbers she will be 70 when she gets here.

To do 40 quarters she would need to work to 80.

I question the practicalities.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Exactly.  And with the type of salary she would be able to earn (assuming she would work in housekeeping/ home health aid/retail), the social security earnings would not be enough to live on.

I think it makes sense to bring parents who are in their fifties or early sixties and are still healthy. They can still work for ten years and pay into Medicare.

My friend brought her Mother and Mom got a housekeeping job at the hotel and worked for ten years. The plan for her was to earn small SSA benefit and go back to her County. Mom actually likes living in US, is now retired and staying here for a foreseeable future.
