Direct consular filing in Italy experiences.

Hi everyone!

I posted on here a few times with some questions and you all were incredibly helpful. I am a dual US/Italian citizen living and working in Italy with my Dutch husband. We have been together 10 years, recently married. Throughout this time I have maintained domicile in the US by voting, paying income taxes, working for US-based employers, maintaining US bank accounts, and maintaining a physical US address which I visit frequently.

Since the last time I posted, I actually decided not to take the employment that was offered me in 2022 from Employer A because I was offered a better and remote position from Employer B. I have remained in their employ since 2022. However, my husband and I want to move to the US by August 2025, or at least want to start the process to be moving to the US by then.

I would love to know if anyone on this board has done direct consular filing (DCF) in Italy and if so, how the process has gone. I've read a number of threads from others in the past, but am looking for current info. Also, important: would my situation constitute an exception valid for DCF? My employer has opened an office in NYC and my position will no longer be remote. So, I am not accepting a new job, but rather my role with the same company has changed significantly. Would this constitute an exceptional circumstance? My employer is willing to be contacted/provide any sorts of support documents needed. I have sent an e-mail to the competent consulate for advice but they don't answer often.

Thank you!

Then you may qualify for DCF under exceptional circumstances.  Here is a relatively recent thread of someone who went through DCF in Naples.  I also added a thread for someone who detailed their DCF process in Tokyo.  The process should be similar in Naples, and the first thing you need to do is email the Naples consulate and provide the information from the second thread.

Good Luck!

I filed DCF in Vietnam, Ho Chi Ming City. We were living in Vietnam and I got a job offer in USA that required me to be there in 3 months. I filed an 1-130 an requested to expidete under exceptional financial circumstance. The !-130 process was approved and my spouse Sprouse recieved her visa within 3 months. In my letter detailing exceptional circumstance request , I discussed my financial and professional development need to accept this position. I also attached my employer's letter of job offer, my response letter accepting the position, and letter from the employer with a requested start date.
