IO changed my application to 3 year rule at interview

Good news, I passed my interview! But I didn't expect this to happen - at the start of the interview my IO explained that he was changing my application to the 3 year rule, rather than the 5 year rule I had applied under (which I qualify for). He said this was "easier" since they only needed to go back 3 years for my travel, work history etc. Thankfully he didn't ask for any additional information/proof - I had already uploaded my marriage certificate just in case.

I wanted to share this since I've mostly heard of the opposite happening in interviews (officers changing a 3 year to a 5 year). But I walked out with my approval and my status is updated to "Oath Ceremony Will Be Scheduled." It was just unexpected!

Interesting! I wonder if there's an internal change happening - maybe something to do with the new application process that went into effect April 1st? I applied after April 1st.

@Rekyrts I'll admit I felt a bit uneasy when he told me he was changing it, because I knew the evidence that you need for 3 year and I knew I didn't have all of it. I did bring some extra evidence with me just in case, like bank statements, but he never asked to see any of it, so it worked out in the end. But going in with an idea of what things will be like and being told that they're changing it - it was a bit nerve wracking.

Sounds like a lazy officer.  However, congratulations!!!  Obtaining citizenship is quite an accomplishment which most Americans don't understand.

Are you sure that you will have to provide 3 years of travel, work history and addresses? My wife went for the 3 year rule and I think we still had to provide 5 or even 7 years of the history.

For the 3 year rule, only 3 years is needed.

You know what, I think I confused it with the Global Entry application where we had to put last 7 years of history :)

could it be the oath ceremony was going to be scheduled too fast making 5 year rule to wait out so 3 year was better??

and if all tax transcripts were done for ROC,  the IO would have them available

I didn't! Just a handful of trips home to Canada (and nothing longer than a week). The officer struck those "older" trips from my application since they weren't needed.

Thank you! Now to check my email obsessively for the oath scheduling notice 😝
