Yes, mostly so that SSA knows to never stop payment if you are absent from the US when you retire for more than 6 months (GC holders lose SSA benefits if they leave for more than 6 months)

Timeline

Update on the visit. Spent 2 hours waiting for our number to be called. Then in took 5 minutes to do everything at the window. 

Just puzzled by the 'receipt' we've got.

 

'This is a receipt to show that you applied for a Social Security card on May 31st. You should have your card in about 2 weeks. 

etc.etc.'


I assume that's the standard response they give. 

 

The clerk told us that the citizen status will be changed in their system within couple of days and that the new SS card will arrive in mail.
