Rishi Sunak has called a surprise general election for 4 July in a high stakes gamble that will see Keir Starmer try to win power for Labour after 14 years of Conservative-led government.

Addressing the nation outside Downing Street, Sunak said it was “the moment for Britain to choose its future” as he claimed the Tories could be trusted to lead the country during a time of global instability.

The rain-soaked prime minister was almost drowned out by the New Labour anthem, D:Ream’s Things Can Only Get Better, blasted out by the anti-Brexit campaigner Steve Bray, as the surprise early election was called.

Sunak’s words were met with alarm by senior Tories who are concerned that their party, trailing 20 percentage points behind Labour in the polls, could face electoral wipeout, with some MPs even considering submitting letters of no confidence.

Well I am pretty sure that it is not to overshadow the US Holiday and obviously it is a different timeline to the US. I fully expect the Tories to get spanked but by how much?

Isn't that normal in the recent past in the UK with the Tories in power for several years, and then Labour takes over for a few years?

Sort of, well no different to the US, the Tories have had a very long run and certainly the last few years have been awful. Outstayed any welcome they had.

Now Labour have some super crazies and tend to implode quicker so last one maybe two terms.

See my implode comment. Now the Labour of my Father and Grandfathers era was a working class based party, Harold Wilson etc. Now it has much more in common with the Dems, so yes you have your Guardianistas section who think the EU is wonderful, second house in Tuscany etc, and then you have the more traditional element who have been impacted by the driving down of wages etc.

So if you are a Labour leader you say nice things to both and do nothing.

Lets say they decided they wanted to rejoin, now as I have implied that would get very nasty and more importantly would take much longer than a Parliamentary term. And it is not a given terms could be agreed.
