Hello,

My 10 year green card expires on May 20 2024.

I have planned to travel to Canada on June 24, 2024.

I know current processing time for green card renewal is 6+ months.

What are my options at this point?

If I apply for renewal and get form I797, does that allow me to travel? How long does the 797 take after applying for renewal?

You will receive extension letter valid for 24 months (I believe). You'll get it in mail 4-6 weeks after filing I-90 online. Expired GC and valid extension letter are good for reentering the US.

Why did you wait until last minute? I believe GC can be renewed 6 months before expiration.

No way I know of.

I submitted form I 90 and received an email with the document that reads “This notice, together with your Form I-551, Permanent Resident Card (also known as the Green Card), provides evidence of your lawful
permanent resident status for 24 months from the expiration date on the front of your Permanent Resident Card.”

Do you think I’m good to go?

Yes, you're good to travel with expired GC and this valid original letter until May 20, 2026. Allow additional time when boarding flights back to the US, as not all airline staff is familiar with letters.
