Massive Solar Storm Will Cause Communications Disruptions and Awesome Displays of Northern Lights

 

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced Thursday that a "severe" G4 geomagnetic storm would hit the Earth perhaps as early as Friday.

 

The "very rare" warning hasn't been issued in 20 years. The radiation will almost certainly wreak havoc on some communications.


"Geomagnetic storms can impact infrastructure in near-Earth orbit and on Earth's surface, potentially disrupting communications, the electric power grid, navigation, radio and satellite operations," the NOAA said.  [...]

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

With thick cloud cover last night we did not get any views. Hopefully something visible tonight. The clouds are very strange today on the horizon.. looks like streaks with some odd rainbow pillar effect. Did not think you could see aurora during daylight so perhaps we're seeing something else unusual.

 

Family and friends from all over saw some amazing views though.

Clever:  Jews Charging Up Space Laser Tell Everyone Those Are Just The Northern Lights

 

JERUSALEM — A spokesman for the Israeli military confirmed yesterday that the colorful lights seen over most of the northern hemisphere were a completely natural phenomenon and were definitely not caused by the Jews charging up their space laser.


"Those eerie lights are no cause for concern," the spokesman told reporters.  "That was just the aurora borealis, more commonly known as the northern lights.  It was certainly not the background radiation caused by charging up the energy core on the laser cannon on our secret space station.  We definitely don't have one of those."  [...]
