Some of the people on here are incredibly self righteous, condescending and judgmental. It is really sickening. Not to mention how sickening the discrimination is in this thread.

I think there's varying degrees of reasonability. Should smokers have to pay more for healthcare if in fact they cost all of us more our healthcare? Just like wreckless drivers...should they pay higher premiums for car insurance than someone who's never been in an accident or gotten a ticket?

There's a big difference between wreckless and reckless

I agree with Marilyn-not everyone who is obese is like 400 pounds-and it's not always the person's fault. I don't particulary think it's ok for anyone to be grossly overweight, I think everyone should at least try to be healthy. By the way, I'm classified as obese. :star:

Wreckless (i.e. those who never wrecked a car) or reckless (careless)? :P

Assuming that health insurance covers mental health too – I’m not sure I’d agree with penalizing people who smoke or drink (for example). Addictions are a disease in themselves I thought…?

Health insurers already penalise people based on their medical history. A friend of mine had a (thankfully mild) stroke before xmas - prior to that he'd been in excellent health. Yet because the doctor prescribed him cholesterol lowering medication - the insurer now views him the same as if he weighed 300 lbs and ate a diet of Pepsi-cola and KFC. His monthly premiums are now huge.

i hear that a lot. & i don't understand it. how do smokers cost non smokers more for their healthcare?

They have higher risks and incidences of health problems, which in turn cost more money. It's the same way with reckless drivers.

yes, they do have higher risks. but, how does that cost non smokers? higher premiums for all to cover it? i'm assuming. i don't remember getting a discount for checking non smoker on insurance forms.

Im still wondering that as well. Not to mention, EVERYONES health is different, 2 non-smokers are prolly paying different, one higher than the other, i wonder if the one paying higher is not throwing a fit bc the other one ate a twinkie for breakfast
