Too bad that posting in VJ isn't a calorie burner...I'd be skinny as a rail.

...

I think health insurance companies can and should adjust people's premiums based on voluntarily lifestyle habits that are detrimental to their health, but not employers. This is another consequence of having employers taking on the responsibility of our healthcare. If we had universal healthcare in this country - this would be a non-issue with employers.

I thought you hated insurance companies?

It's interesting what employers will and will not do. A good number of larger employers offer a carrot approach (both in a subtle and overt way). To see this company use a stick method is interesting. Certain employers can dictate (as much as you can to a health insurance company) what will be covered and what will not - for instance, student health insurance at a good number of Catholic universities (and employee health insruance also actually) will not, in many cases, cover birth control.

I would be interested to read the fine print. It's much easier from a legal standpoint to encourage someone to work out (offering fitness challenges, and free gym membership for instance) than it is to financially punish those who are not healthy.

my question is - who determines what is detrimental or not? i think riding a motorcycle is detrimental, especially without a helmet. others will disagree, i'm sure, but it illustrates that what each individual believes to be detrimental varies. leave it up to the businesses to decide what is or isn't and guess what - we'll all have a boring life (i'm sure all of the typing i do on vj would indict me for carpal tunnel syndrome )

Steve the only roots you have are the ones you eat. Your self proclaiming rationale is based on irrational thinking. Such as global warming is gonna kill us but i'm gonna have a kid. Rational? Absolutely not. Whats your favorite tool? Let me guess a monkey wrench.

Marc, let's be honest. You're one of the most emotional posters here - it comes beaming through in your posts. I'm sure I'm not the first one to tell you that you tend react first and then think about it later. That's okay, along as you are aware of it when forming political opinions. I'd recommend staying away from talk radio like Savage, O'Reilly and Limbaugh, because they thrive on emotional saps like you.

I'm not just saying this because I'm fat... but this is a bad, bad, BAD idea and a huge invasion of personal privacy. Not to mention overt discrimination. If I was one of their employees I'd be calling out the lawyers because they can't be allowed to get away with it! If they are allowed to discriminate against people in this way, what's next? Besides, are they going to fine the anorexics and bulimics they're going to be helping to create? How about the arthritics? People with mental health issues? People who indulge in dangerous sports? People who drive fast cars/speed? Where does it stop?

I am going to have to say that I disagree with fining people for being "obese" as calculated by the BMI. They should measure the percentage of body fat if they want to know if someone is really obese.

Now, as for being skinny = being healthy. I have MAJOR opinions on that. Research has shown that a "fat" person who exercises regularly is more healthy than a "skinny" person who does not exercise regularly.

I am overweight. And yet I exercise regularly. I don't eat ANY sugar, fast foods or "junk foods." I eat a diet high in fiber with lots of fruits and veggies and lean meats. And yet, I am still overweight.

Am I less healthy just because my BMI is high? Does that mean a person who has a BMI of 24, but who doesn't exercise and eats fast food and junk food, is healthier than I am just because they have a low BMI?

Enough with the jokes.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.
