Hi! My fiancé (beneficiary) has just arrived in the U.S. with his K1 visa, and we are starting to prepare the paperwork for our green card application as we are getting married next week.

 

My fiancé previously worked in the U.S. through a J-1 visa, and therefore already received a SSN. While he no longer has the physical card, he still remembers his SSN which is what we have entered on our paperwork throughout the K1 process.

 

When filling out the i-485, it seems like a new SSN card can be mailed to my fiancé. Would there be any benefit of my fiancé going to the Social Security Office to apply for a new SSN card before submitting the i-485, instead?

No, you should be fine with just the number for the I485.  He probably should apply for a replacement card at some point though.

Not sure I know where my card is, I have never had a situation where I have needed to show it.

Just filled in the number and when I used to employ people never asked for the card,

I agree although I do know where my card is that I got some 45 years ago.  It is amazing how my signature has changed over the years.

I guess it's not universally enforced.

Now they do ask for my DL every now and then, scan and email, despite not driving one of their vehicles.

Thank you, everyone! There is a section on the i-485 that specifically says "Do you want the SSA to issue you a Social Security Card" which from how it sounds would resolve our problem? Not sure how long it would take to receive that card, or if there would be any issues with it being a reissued SSN card versus a new one.

u have to go to SS office to apply for a replacement

 

u do not do this thru USCIS/they process request for new #'s only

your SS # from previous US stay is a "forever" #

 

I have always had to show employer SS card as this is # they use to pay into SS benefits from your witholdings on pay stubs
