I'm a Canadian married to an American. I now have a 2yr conditional green card. I'd like to visit family in Canada in the fall but not quite sure if a green card will be enough to return back to the states. Please help me confirm what I need in order to return back to the states.

Thanks!

You're good, but can I just LOL at the fact you have your country listed as "Georgia". Are you sure that's not just the state you live in? ;)

Thank you all for your responses! Let me re-iterate this one more time. Did the US not change the rule that all US citizens must hold a valid passport to travel anywhere including ppl who hold a greencard must carry some sort of passport as well? Or has this changed and perm residents only require the greencard to travel to and from canada and the us?

Thanks again!

I have my Canadian passport to visit Canada but the question is will the greencard be sufficient enough for me to return back to the states? Given that the new rule has stated all US citizens must carry a passport including greencard holders - but how can I have US passport if Im not a citizen yet, I'm just a permanent resident. So the question is do I need other papers to apply for versus the passport application for a conditional perm resident?

The combination of your green card and the passport of your home country will get you into the USA, that's what a Green Card does. The rule doesn't mean you have to have a US Passport!

van,

Right, you are not a US citizen - you are not eligible for a US passport and the rule does not apply to you.

You really don't need any of that stuff. The Green Card itself and passport will suffice in proving to the CBP that you are legally allowed to return to the USA.
