This screams a terrible idea to me, am I missing anything? Things are well overall, a month or so until through the USCIS process, 129F. She was floating the idea of raising a few pigs for profit?  She doesn’t have much room, little to no experience doing so.

A quick net search shows the practice in the Philippines break even at best. Am I to much of a skeptic?

Again, things are well overall. I think she would really try it. I’m just thinking, with the ultra low labor costs there, and expenses, any profit would be minimal. It’s like the neighbor selling backyard chucked eggs for $3 a dozen, profit is usually negative.

My Grandad I know kept a pig, I think it was fed on scraps mainly, seemed a not uncommon thing to do. Not so common now.

Chickens or ducks seem easier.

It has been my experience that nearly all business ventures started by Filipinos lead to very small profits, which they are okay with or at least that is their expectation. Anything NOT losing money is seen as a gain, you are thinking with an American mindset.

I doubt it would be very expensive to help her do this, but almost certainly there will be no profit.  Your investment and periodic up-keep expenses will not be factored in as part of the cost, so to her it will seem quite profitable.  For you, not so much.  I would stick with quashing the idea.  I've read a little about others doing similar, but the pigs got sick, which substantially increased the loss.  As stated above, as long as she is not losing money, she will consider it profitable, and time well spent.  Profit margins are extremely low even if you know what you are doing.  If she has no experience, she (you) will lose money.
