As the OP said, the USCIS folks took the expired green card and extension letter when they issued the I-551 stamp.

We don't have the card. We have purchased another ticket through Germany

Does the UK not accept the wet-stamp I-551 at all, or just not for transiting?

I have an EU passport (Austria), an approved UK ETA and an unexpired wet-stamp I-551 in my passport along with an expired (corner clipped) GC.
My return flight to the US will be to Denver from Brussels via London Heathrow.

The OP was from Kenya so needed a transit visa. If you’re from Austria then you should be fine, but double check it on the link given above in this thread.
