My cousin spent 2 years in South carolina on a teachers Visa, she is white and was dating a black gentleman, BUT they had to date in secrecy as most of the people in the area just wouldn't go for it, and most likely would have lost her job!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I was at the dog park yesterday, chatting with another dog owner--she stated on the way over to the dog park--a fellow drove up beside her, and just started screaming at her----because she had an Obama sticker on her car!! She said she was scared, as this guy was screaming, and telling her to go live with the terrorists!! weird!!

My son saved up his allowance for an Obama shirt and I won't let him wear it without me around and we went out for dinner last week and some old lady told me I was "disgusting" for allowing my child to wear that.

I just told her to take a look in the mirror to get the true definition of disgust.

But being here during this election tells me just how far this country has to go when it comes to racism. It's a very racist place. Canada has its extremely racist areas too, but I think that its just more covered up, and that's not any better either. But something tells me that if Obama was running there, he wouldn't be faced with half of the obstacles he's being faced with here.

This entire election is just ageism, sexism, racism at its finest.

:o

Stupid!

You know I agree with you that there is racism in Canada and that it is maybe just covered up more there than it is here - but that's ok with me - I can't stop people from being racists, but I sure don't want to listen to it. I'm also glad that it's not as 'socially acceptable' to voice your racist opinions there (in general).

My friend, Rick, died.

Ah, I didn't see this earlier. I am sorry for your loss.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

oh and i just tried something new for lunch - vegetarian fair of some kind.. looked like a portobello mushroom topped with corn & veggies.. and it tasted like the side of a barn.. blech.. thankfully I also bought chocolate :P

I seriously LOLed when I read that! Then I wondered when you originally tasted the side of a barn to know that your adventurous fare was similar in taste?

I hate when I try something new and its awful. The silver lining was indeed the chocolate. I'll need to remember that back-up plan.

hee hee.. no i've never licked the side of a barn that I can remember, but if you can imagine licking one.. that's what lunch tasted like :) LOL!

Krikit,

I'm also sorry to hear about your friend. Cancer is an awful, awful disease.

~ Catherine

Thanks Catherine. You know what's weird? My friend was given a year to live two weeks ago and he's dead. My uncle was given two weeks to live two months ago and he's still going. It just goes to show you how unpredictable life, and death, can be.

" The U.S. race even has a major female candidate - Sarah Palin, a one-woman Entertainment Channel, whose antics have enlivened America's race and terrified the world. As happens, Canadians are experts on Palin and know more about her than even Americans.

That's because we share a border with Alaska - so we can see her from here"
