Good morning!

So my Mom called me yesterday, there was a big fire yesterday morning at the apartment building where she lives - they got woken up by the alarms at around 5 a.m. - lucky for her she is one of the people who live on the 3rd floor so she was back in her apartment around noon.

It's a seniors complex - but not a 'care' facility - completely independant living - the fire station is on the next block. So her friend that lives in the complex came and got her and helped her down the stairs and then parked her in his van. Then they wheeled her down to the fire station - then they all got on a bus a few hours later and then they all ended up at the seniors community center down the street.

Anyway, they figure the guy was smoking in bed - no mention of the fact that he's an alcoholic and that he is also unwell and no doubt on some kind of medication.

On another note, my BIL went for an interview at the Hormel plant yesterday - machine something person - anyway, they told him to expect to spend 1 hour there - half an hour with the HR person and half with the department person.

So he goes to the interview at 2:00 a few hours later i'm talking to my Sister and she is wondering where he is. He finally calls around 5ish I believe it was...he is still there, doing written tests etc etc, while they are talking he says "I have to go take a welding test now" - she says so you will be home in about an hour? He says yes and hangs up.

Around 7 she is STILL waiting for him to get home - I'm saying do you think they are holding him hostage at the Hormel plant or?? (I am really helpful as you can see).

He finally arrives home at 7:15 - a 5 HOUR 'interview'!!!!

So after all that, they will let him know next week.

Wouldn't it make more sense to have everyone in for the 1 hour interview and then once you have a short list put them through the 5 hour interview!? And at least warn them so they can bring snacks and a thermos

Wow Trailmix, I'm so glad that your Mom's okay! Glad her friend came and helped her out of the building. (F)

Those must be some prized jobs at Hormel! Geesh! Maybe they had him do all these tests because they WERE interested in him. Maybe they weed out people along the way...say at each stage. I would highly doubt it if they had everyone go through all of that would they? If so, there HR department must be huge...maybe he needs to apply there! Sounds like HR has a need of more people!

Wow. The guy's lucky he didn't die from smoke inhalation. I'm glad to hear everyone's alright.

I'd be very surprised if your BIL doesn't get that job.... it sounds like they've decided to hire him and just went ahead and processed him while they had him there.

I agree  I guess i'm wimpy, I would have left after about hour 2

I'm glad your Mom is alright and no one was hurt in the fire. Fire is one of the things that really scares me and one of the reasons I never wanted to live in any sort of apartment complex - I could take care of my own risks but I couldn't guarantee someone else wasn't doing something stupid like smoking in bed!

Good luck to your brother in law - it sounds like they are serious. If he hadn't done well at the initial interview it probably only would have been the expected hour. 5 hours does, however, seem somewhat excessive, especially when they won't let him know until next week. Possibly they are allowing time to check his references.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

I had a landscaping guy come by to look at the back yard and I asked him about putting up a cage to keep the lizards out. He says it doesn't work..... which I've figured out by myself because doors don't keep them out either. They're sneaky buggers. I had my husband stuff steel wool in the sliding glass door before we left on vacation..... I had visions of a whole herd of them inside the house by the time we got home.

Oh! I meant to say, I think they are imperative! I think they would actually work really well, it's just that this porch hasn't been taken care of properly and there are little in-ways here and there.

Plus, where it connects to the siding little critters can occasionally wander in - if this were attached to my house I would have every nook and cranny sealed off!

You prob didn't see my posting where I mentioned we had a SNAKE on the porch! Granted a little one..but a snake none-the-less!

Okay...what's to stop them from coming into the house from the porch? Can they just slither in when you open the porch door, or sliding glass door? I like to see salamanders from afar and say..."hey, how cute!", but truly, I'd freak if they were in my house. Lizards, snakes, big bugs...ick!

There is no door on this porch...I see what you mean. I guess if your porch had a doorway it would be a possibility.

Plus our current screened in porch is surrounded by plants, which they love, in my own house it would be bordered by cement - tiles, whatever...at least by the doorway so I could see them

i'm sure there are many to choose from.

Good Morning! Coffee's on! Hope you have a grand day today!

Good morning!

So my Husband was just leaving for work, he had mentioned earlier that this morning there was a little frog on the patio (which he caught and took outside). Anyway, we come in to the apartment, as he is about to leave, and it's dark in the kitchen and I see something on the floor, i'm looking at it thinking, well at least it isn't moving!

I turn on the light in there and...yes...of course...it moved then

Another small frog! So I run to get the catch and release net and the darn thing goes under the fridge. There is no way to pull this fridge out as it is a galley kitchen.

Husband had to leave for work so I said, no prob, I will deal with the frog!

So I did! He came out a few mins later, I caught him and he is now living lakeside!

Awww Now, little frogs I could handle...Glad though you didn't have to sit in a chair in front of the fridge all day.

I just spotted this article in the Calgary Herald - thought it was kind of interesting - the place was really packed when it first opened - lines at the drive through etc.

Krispy Kreme exits Calgary

Herald News Services

Published: Wednesday, August 13, 2008

Doughnuts - Krispy Kreme rode into Calgary just over four years ago boasting a cult-like brand, a reputation for freshness and an air that was expected to put a double-double dose of humility into Tim Hortons fans.

But the same store that saw people lining up for its 6 a.m. opening in 2004 is now shut.

At the northeast location is posted a simple notice stating: "Sorry, this Krispy Kreme location is closed as of August 1, 2008."

As retail analysts tell the Herald's Mario Toneguzzi, Calgary never warmed up to the franchise, opting instead to stick with the likes of Tim Hortons, Starbucks and Good Earth Cafe.

A Krispy Kreme representative told the Herald the store is a victim of Krispy Kreme's "turnaround strategy," which includes closing "underperforming stores." link
