Okays, now I know how to fill the form out. I apologise for all the questions, but I worry incase I have accidentally missed anything.

1. Will my card say: Can work with authorization with INS printed on it?

2. Will I be asked if I am married? Should I avoid this question?

3. Do the people at the SS places give much hassle around K1 thing?

Last question (i think):

4. When I phoned the immigration people a few weeks ago and when I submitted all my adjustment of status forms, I was told that I could not get authorisation to work on my K1 visa, as the authorisation would expire with the visa. Does the same thing apply with the SSN? I know the number will not expire, but will it create any difficulties for me to apply for the SSN before I get the EAD?

1] Yes it will say something to that effect

2] Though it should not matter, I think the consensus would be avoid if possible

3] No at least not for us

4] [a] Work authorization expires with the I-94 not with the visa

No

1.) I can't remember the exact verbiage, but apparently it will have some sort of demarkation. I think it says something to the effect of 'need DHS authorization'.

2.) Depends - possibly not. Mine asked me if we'd applied for his EAD yet, but only because she was hell bent on us having that before giving him his SSN. Once she told me he now needed a K3  I realized that telling her we'd already sent in our AOS paperwork would not have necessarily clued her in to the fact we were married. She was patently CLUELESS about immigration.

If you are asked, be honest, of course - but based on my experience, I wouldn't offer it up.

3.) That seems to totally depend on the SSA office. Compare my experience and Heather's, for example...!

4.) No. The two are actually separate entities. As a K1er, you are 'work authorized' for SSA's purposes (see the file in my sig), but as you know - for immigration purposes, you must have EAD for an employer to legally employ you.

Obviously you will need both the SSN and the EAD to start work - other than that, they really have no bearing on one another.

Does that make sense?

*edited to say - are you enjoying the TracyTN/fwaguy tag team ???  :D

Thanks guys. This has been HUGELY helpful. If the SSN comes within the next week, I would be able to see about getting my Illinois drivers license and sorting out bank account stuff too! That is very exciting. Thank you so much for your help with this one!

1 We had no problems with applying using married name, we provided, Passport, I-94 card, marriage cert, and SSA application.

2 Yes it will have the disclaimer "With DHS work Auth only" on it, You apply for a new one with out the notation after getting green card.

3 The un-informed ones can and do give K-1 hassles.

4 Yes that is correct, if you file for EAD before filing AOS the "Temp" EAD expires when the I-94 card does. You file for EAD with or after filing for AOS, that EAD is good for 1 year. SSN is NOT work authorization, EAD, GREEN-CARD or CITIZENSHIP conveys work authorization.

OUR TIME LINE Please do a timeline it helps us all, thanks.
