TDLR: Can you share the expiry date on your K1 Visa and how it relates to your timeline?

Hello. I've seen conflicting information on this from multiple supposedly-reputable sources, and while my fiancé and I have spend a lot of time trying to read, research, call, etc., we cannot seem to get a firm answer on this. So, I thought I'd go to the folks who've already gotten their K1 Visas and ask.

Please let me know:

A. My K1 expiry date is 180 days from the date my I-129F was approved

B. My K1 expiry date is 180 days from the date I passed my interview

C. My K1 expiry date is something else (What?)

This will be so, so helpful for our wedding planning. Thank you!

180 days from the medical exam.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

The reason you can't get a firm answer is because many things can change the expiry date. It should be 6 months from the medical. But it is not unheard of it being much less than that.

Your I-129F petition was only approved in February.  Montreal is very backlogged for interviews, it could take many months before yours is even scheduled.  Even after you get an interview scheduled, there is no guarantee that the K-1 visa will be approved, and if it is, no set timeline for how long after the interview it will take to get your passport back with the issued visa in it.  Some in your situation have even seen Canada Post lose the passport.  As for wedding planning, it is impossible to predict exactly when you will have the K-1 visa, so you should be flexible and not commit to any specific date for the wedding.  We have seen other couples here on VJ who made wedding plans, sent out invitations, spent money on expensive, non-refundable deposits for venues, etc. and then saw K-1 visa delays and had to change everything.  On rare occasions, a K-1 visa holder is denied entry at the US entry point.  Hopefully, none of those delays will affect your case, but they could.  The US Dept. of State clearly warns visa applicants: "Please do not make firm travel plans, such as buying a ticket or scheduling events, until you have your visa and IV packet in hand."

Your question was answered in your previous thread:

Hello. Thank you. I asked again because in my previous post, which was a general inquiry while this post is a specific ask, had only one answer and it still remains different from multiple other sources. For example, even 180 days (which you said) is slightly different than 6 months (which the answer in my previous post said). So I thought it would not be unfair for me to continue seeking clarity with this ask.

You did! And I am very grateful for your time originally explaining. I thought it fair to ask a related question now after a few weeks of more research, since, still, I received different information from that one reply and multiple other reputable sources including the Gov website and Boundless. I didn't think there was harm asking this here

I understand, and I appreciate the reminder of caution. My interview date is booked already for June. My fiancé and I will not be doing anything rash, risky or expensive under any naive assumptions. Thank you for your help

That one answer you got previously was very specific...and accurate.  Good luck on the rest of your journey.

It is considered spamming to start multiple threads on the same topic, which is why the mods discourage it.

It's good that you're thinking ahead.  Use the upcoming months of waiting to become an "A" student of the entire immigration process, and you'll be able to hit the ground running.  :)

Once your K1 is approved and the visa is in your passport it will tell you when it expires.  It is that simple.
