Yes you will need to . 

 &   You (as of now) in Texas cannot renew or  even change address on your drivers license if you have a green card, so you have to go in and show them your a US Citizen.

So what do I tell SSA? Bring my certificate and also fill out the application to get a new unrestricted SSC? I don’t think this can be done online? I know I could have removed the SSC to unrestricted when I got my GC but it wasn’t needed. Was this mandatory to do? 

 

I cannot apply for passport until I do this?

 

DPS is Department of Public Safety in Texas. We get our Driver License there.

I have many years left for my driver license to expire. No need to change address. 
 

I have to go in DPS and tell them to change status?

You can download SS-5, fill it and bring it with you to SSA to save time. I'm not sure if it can be done online. When I removed restrictions on mine, SSA wasn't open and I did everything online / by post. I had to mail my actual GC to them!!! I'd think if it's still allowed, you'd me mailing naturalization certificate. I wouldn't personally take the risk. I had no choice during COVID, but now I'd walk there in person.

No it wasn't mandatory. But it allowed you to only show SS card and DL to employers and not GC (plus any extension letters)

No it wasn't mandatory. But it allowed you to only show SS card and DL to employers and not GC (plus any extension letters)

I would not have risked mailing original GC.

So if I apply for U.S Passport without updating SSA it would be denied?

 

At least I can register to vote after Oath?

No you won't get denied. You can get passport first, it's totally fine. The benefit of doing SSA first is you don't leave certificate with them. But with passport, you won't have certificate back for some time, meaning you cannot get unrestricted SS card in that time.

Take your unrestricted SS card with you - just in case they want to scan it for their files. I don't believe I took my NC with me.
