Visiting home (UK)

Hi,

 

Apologies if this is not the best place to ask this question - I’m visiting home for the first time in 4.5 years in June and I’m wondering the best way to use my phone while I’m home. I have Mint Mobile. They have an international pass within the app where you can buy packages which give you a certain amount of minutes, texts and data but it seems really expensive. Anyone have any suggestions for a cheaper alternative? My biggest thing is I will need data while I’m there. I’m there for 2 weeks.

Does your phone run an eSIM?  Better yet does it run two esims?

 

Personally I wouldn’t rely on Mint in the UK - I am a Mint customer and have never got the data to work when I am abroad. Your mileage may vary as I am pretty rural in the UK.

 

If you can run an eSIM, I’d recommend Gigsky or Nomad for data only roaming esims. Both me and my wife have used those when abroad. I don’t know how their cost compares to Mint.

 

Or if you can run two esims, get yourself a GiffGaff eSIM when you are back. Easily enough data for a £10 top up. This is what I do now.

You could just purchase a sim while in the U.K. (EE O2 etc), a 30 day sim will give the data you want and a number, (which you wouldn’t really need). I just use WhatsApp and everyone uses that to contact me. It’s the good data package that you’d need though. You could turn off VM on your U.S. mobile number if you wanted while in the U.K., or you could add a modified OGM asking people to contact you via other means.

Not UK specific, but my wife uses a local eSim when she travels back home.  It works fairly well.

most supermarkets will sell pay as you go SIM cards, usually between £10-£15 per month with calls and data, it will probably work out cheaper to get one of those and call back to the USA (if you need too) via WhatsApp
