Extremely confused about EAD and working

My husband is coming to the states on a K-3 visa. He needs to work right away as we will be struggling just to get by on my income. I've been reading that he has to apply for an EAD and then a SSN. The EAD takes 90 days and the SSN takes 30 days, so he won't be able to work for four months? This is impossible! Am I correct on this? Also, I've read that if he applies for adjustment to permanent status, he does not need an EAD. Correct? And how long does that take?

Yes as soon as he arrives you can file for EAD but it will take 90 days or more, then he can get his SS card. Unfortunately this is what he will have to do.

You will also have to file for AOS for his greencard and he wont need the EAD then but it takes longer than the EAD. You can file the EAD before you file the AOS. This is what we did.

You would be very lucky to get EAD in under 90 days.

The reason for filing for EAD is because the AOS takes longer to get approved. People who can wait out the AOS don't even bother filing for EAD.

It takes time for your husband to get his EAD. I hear on the average 3 1/2 months. My husband has been here for two months now and we are still waiting for his EAD to be approved. After his gets his EAD then he can apply for his Social security number.

If money is tight then apply for EAD asap after he arrives.

You can hold off applying for AOS until after he starts working and things get better financially.

Andre's SSN only took about a week after he applied. But, yah, the EAD is a waiting game.

Good luck to you.

Better delaying his arrival until he has the saving to cover the fees and the 3 months.

as,

You are correct that your husband likely won't be able to work for 3-4 months, perhaps a bit longer, after he arrives in the USA. Learn to like rice, beans, and tap water. Or, as Boiler suggests, have him put off entry for a while if he and you can accumulate some savings by doing so.

He does not need an EAD once his application to adjust status has been approved, which can take 3 months to over a year depending on a number of things starting with which District of Sub office serves your place of residence.
