Hello,

My fiance and I will be married soon. I have healthcare under my parents government plan and she does not have a plan. Are there any recommended, inexpensive plans that she could have?

Thanks!

Your options:

Ensure fiancé has their SSN or you may have a hard time.

1)Find a plan through the affordable care act's marketplace (either state or federal marketplace whichever is available). If using this option you will need to also have the NOA1 for Adjustment of Status as an immigration qualifier.

2)Buy a plan out of pocket through any insurer available in your state.

3)Wait until new spouse is employed at a job that offers insurance.

4)Get off your parents insurance and use any of the above options including finding insurance via an employer to have a joint plan.

Any of the above does not mean that those plans will be 'inexpensive'. Cheaper does not equal better quality insurance either, when shopping for insurance you will have to compare quality of the plan offered vs cost. The third option is not ideal as who knows when the spouse will be work authorized and then be employed. Immigrating to a new country and marriage are QLE (qualifying life events) which make a person eligible to use the marketplace outside of open enrollment. You will need to explore qualifying documents required.

For me, I chose to buy a joint plan out of pocket with an insurer and used that until my husband was employed and offered us coverage which was far better. However that was a long wait and was quite expensive. How affordable it will be for you will be based on a variety of factors unique to you and your state.

*** Topic moved from Taxes & finances during US immigration to Moving to the US for where health insurance is discussed ***

When I first came to the US, I had to take out insurance through marketplace under affordable care act (ACA) because my husband was “locked” into Medicaid due to the pandemic and i obviously couldn’t be on Medicaid. It was not a cheap insurance even though we got tax breaks for the premium. However, I’d rather pay that than be stuck with no insurance.

I then got under my employers plan once I could work. Once my husband changed jobs and was no longer locked into Medicaid, I got on his employers plan which was cheaper than mine.

Best for you to take out insurance under your employer and add your fiancé. That would probably be the cheapest.

Visa received October 2023 so when did she enter the US?

How old are u ?

After age 26,  u need your own insurance plan

very surpprised that casa did not make u show research for health care plan that u could afford for your new "to be wife"

A job that offered health is best as Government plans are not that great.

Low payment/high deductible (in the thousands)

high premium lower deductibles but still high

I wish we had found this post sooner.  My husband and I are so confused.  When I (USC) moved to Iowa earlier in the year I applied for ACA and was given access to the marketplace probably within a week.  Unfortunately I let the plan lapse with wedding costs and have tried special enrollment and now open enrollment trying to get access again for us.  We got into the Medicaid cogs somehow and received a denial letter that said we would be passed to the federal marketplace for review now.  Exhausting.  I might have to pitch a promotion at work to become salaried and get us employer provided healthcare because as wage based I don’t qualify for it until my annual in March.
