Yep.

I have previously filed for I-130 and I-485 both of which are held in abeyance in my local field office. What should I do next now that my VAWA is approved? Do I write my local field office a letter to request them to restart my AOS process and provide them a copy of my VAWA approval ?

Did you ever transfer the I-485 to the I-360, or did they just put them in abeyance and nobody has ever followed up on this?

Correct. It was just put in abeyance and nothing else

Well you've got two options:

Option 1: Transfer of underlying basis: https://www.uscis.gov/policy-manual/volume-7-part-a-chapter-8

Write to the office that has your I-485, explain roughly what happened (I-485 was held in abeyance, you've filed VAWA I-360, I-360 was approved, you're asking that they transfer the basis for that pending I-485 to the I-360). Include a copy of the I-360 approval notice and I-485 receipt notice.

Option 2: File a new I-485.

I'm not sure which is better since I don't know what they'd do with the old I-485 at this point, likely send it to Vermont,  who'd then send it to the NBC, who'd send it back to the field office.

Does that mean my VAWA is finally approved??? What next steps should I take to inform my local field office to continue processing my I-485? I’ve had previously mailed them a letter (when I applied for I-360) to hold my AOS in abeyance

Congratulations so good to hear some excellent news. Did they ask for psychologist evaluation? The timeline seems about right just little 2 months early based on the processing time for i360.

My I-485 and I-130 are both in Lawrence, MA field office as I reside in MA. I’d be sending that letter as you suggested to the Lawrence Field Office, yes? Bottom line no matter how I slice this pie, I would have to do something about it and not wait for USCIS to initiate the next step for me.

Yeah, send it to Lawrence Field Office. Honesty this is something you should've done way back when you got the I-360 receipt notice. They normally only hold those things for 30 or 60 days so I guess you did get lucky with that regard that they didn't just deny it sometime in the past years.

Also yes, if you don't tell them "hey, got my I-360 approved, unfreeze my I-485 and transfer" then they won't because the very reason why your I-485 is still sitting in abeyance is because it fell through the cracks.

Apologies. I just checked my original communication to Lawrence Field Office when I mailed them my request to hold it in abeyance. I did write to them and ask USCIS to transfer the underlying basis of my I-485 to I-360. In the same letter, I also asked USCIS to keep my I-485 application in abeyance until the I-360 has been adjudicated and a decision has been rendered.

in this case, do I still need to write a letter to Lawrence and ask them to resume processing my I-485?

*edit* — this is what I have written:

Dear Officer:

Please be advised that my I-360, VAWA SELF-PETITION, EAC-XXXXXXX has been approved on February 6, 2025. Herein attached is my Notice of Receipt for the I-485 application and my I-360 approval notice.

The transfer of the underlying basis of pending I-485 to I-360 alongside my abeyance request of the I-485 until a decision is rendered on my I-360 application was requested in writing to Lawrence Field Office on November 4, 2021.

Listen, send it in, you don't really stand to lose anything by asking something they might've been doing already.
