Is there a reason for the 50 something year wait to get it out? :blink:

Sheesh! To the posters above, if you read the article it's obvious that they DID know it was there all along, but at the time it was far too dangerous to try and remove it - it might have killed her or blinded her trying! And it caused her life-long health problems that she just had to put up with because there wasn't any alternative... until recently, when a specialist decided that yes, it could now be removed without killing her. Medical technology has come an amazingly long way in the last fifty years...
