One way plane ticket significantly more expensive than return...will a return be okay?

@j26 did you manage to cancel the return journey? Did you have to pay any amendment or cancellation fees and did you get a refund?

Hey!

 

I flew with British Airways and I cancelled the return leg a couple of days after I landed. I didn’t have to pay any fees, however I didn’t get any refund at all (which I knew would happen)

 

I also kept my cancellation confirmation email just in case!

That's odd, I have never seen a round trip being that much more expensive, What airline?  I fly Delta and American quit a bit and check one way vs roundtrip and it always about half price maybe a 20% more for one ways but never seen a one way be that much higher.

This was with British Airways and internationally I think a lot of the time it's the norm if I am not mistaken. It definitely was when I was doing my research at the time.

I have made many many trips to and from Philippines last decade or so mostly on Delta, and usually one way it about a tad less than half of roundtrip.

 

What you do if you ever have that scenario again, Is book roundtrip, and make sure you have a frequent flyer account with British Airways and then cancel the return ticket, then you get half of it as credit to use in the future.  I do this quit often with Delta Airlines, and you have a year to use your "E-Credits", if you can't fly within a year, then you rebook again a ticket and burn up as much credit you can and extend the credit for another year.

Not for me, I did research and Reddit said that a lot of the time one ways are more expensive than round trips, I guess we’ve just had different experiences! At the time the only airlines flying into Austin were British Airways and AA as they are partnered and there was no other option for me. It worked out though!

It was the same for me as well where one way cost more than return
