N-400: Information about residence

Hi!

I'm filling the N-400. Pretty straightforward, but I have doubts when it comes to part 5: "Information About Your Residence".

I became a permanent resident in January 2019. When my PLR was approved (I got it through DV Lottery), I provided a friend's address as to where to receive my green card. But I still lived in my original country for 3 months before actually moving to the US and getting my own address (in a different state than my friend's address).

So my questions are: for that first period...

  1. Should I list my friend's address as a residency address, since it's where the GC was sent?

  2. Should I instead list my home country address since it is where I really was physically?

I hope this makes sense. Maybe I am overthinking it, but I don't want to get denied over that small detail... Thank you for any help you can provide!

Follow the instructions

Part 5. Information About Your Residence List every address where you have lived during the last 5 years (including other countries) prior to filing your Form N-400. Start with where you live now, and then include the dates for each place you have lived in a month, day, and year format (mm/dd/yyyy). For example, type or print May 1, 1998 to June 1, 1999 as 05/01/1998 to 06/01/1999. Provide your mailing address if it is different from your current address. Provide “In Care Of Name” information, if applicable. If you do not have a State or Province, enter the name of your city again in that box. If you do not have a ZIP or Postal Code, enter “00000” in the ZIP or Postal Code box.

Another thing to think about... Did you apply on 5 year anniversary of Resident Since date on your GC OR 5 year +3 month (anniversary of you coming to the US)? If first, I heard it's possible to get N-400 denied on the ground that you actually didn't start residing in the US on Resident Since date, but three months later.

That is very relevant.

I haven't applied yet.  After reading the previous replies and reading more about the continuous residence rule, I was planning to do it 89 days before the fifth anniversary of when I came to definitely live in the US). That was almost five months after I first came to activate the GC, stayed a couple of days and went back to my country to get things ready for the move.

I believe I should be good with that approach...

Thanks!

When was your first entry to the US? January 2019 or 3 months later?
I’m confused if you entered the U.S. and then went back home for three months or if something else happened. Although I assume your 5 year anniversary is January 2024 and you are filing for the N400 a few months after the resident since date? Can you confirm?
@Verrou is right though. You use the dates where you physically resided after activating the immigrant visa not the address you used for GC…

Where did you stay when you first landed?
ETA You answered my question while I was typing. I would personally apply on the day I arrived to LIVE in the US not 89 days before… but I’m fairly cautious (this way you don’t have to list the foreign address)

Yes, let me clarify:

- I first landed to activate the GC in January 2019.

- I left the US two days after landing and spent the next five months in my home country.

- I established continuous residence in the US in June 2019.

So I'm thinking of applying 89 days before the day in June when I established continuous residence.

About addresses, all understood thanks to you all :)

If you apply in June a few days after anniversary of you coming to the US, you won't have to list foreign addresses and you'll be 100% solid.
