Filed N-400 Online, Attempting to Case Online and Cannot

Hey everyone,

So we submitted an N-400 on December 22nd for my wife online, we got a Form I-797C notice of action form in the mail about the biometric appointment being waived. We logged into her USCIS account online and went to the area where it says add a case.

It asks you for a USCIS case receipt number along with a OAC (online access code), the Form I-797C has a CODE of N/A. So, we sent a message to USCIS via the contact center and they replied back with " it is not necessary to enter an OAC to view your case information." However, the system requires a OAC and will not let us move forward and view case information. Has anyone experienced this and if so how did you solve it?

Thank you!

Are you actually looking in the myUSCIS account at my.uscis.gov where you presumably submitted the N-400 and not the old system at egov.uscis.gov? Those are two completely separate systems with different login credentials if you ever used the old one.

To add to my previous comment, if you are in the correct online system where you did the actual N-400 filing there's no need to add the case manually, it will be listed under "My Cases" automatically as soon as you submit the form.

Thanks for the comment @NorthByNorthwest yes we used the myUSCIS to submit the N-400. However when we log in there is no My Case section. This is all that we can see.

Interesting, my account doesn't look like that and does not ask for an OAC to add a case. Have you gone through the Verify your identity step? That might be what's missing, it won't show secure case info without that step.

Ahh this is the issue then, well its asking for her DOS case ID from her original visa app. We do not have any of that original paperwork from 13 years ago. Any ideas?

I don't recall being asked about that when I created the account, but it was a while ago. Just to confirm - is the account in your wife's name? In case you were using an account created by you perhaps making a new one in her name from scratch will work depending on what verification steps they use these days. For naturalization she is the petitioner and beneficiary and you're not really involved.

Good guess. Many US citizens apparently complete and file the N-400 forms for their LPR spouses. To me this is surprising, as the immigrant is supposed to be able to complete their own application since they're the ones naturalizing. I think you may be right about this.

The account we have been working with is the account my wife setup after she submitted her N-400.

Bummer, in that case your best bet is probably to call USCIS and see if there’s another way to verify her identity for the account.

You can still see the latest update on the case status page using the receipt number, you just won’t be able to see the contents of notices like you can with a verified account.
