I was preparing the documents required for the K3 visa interview at Mumbai embassy and had a question on the Police Clearance Certificate requirement. Is there a requirement on whether we need police clearance certificates from just the last place of residence. My wife's current residence is in Ahmedabad but used to stay in Surat before. Do I need to get police certificates from both ahmedabad and surat ? I tried searching the Mumbai embassy website but couldnt find the information I was looking for...

if your passport was issued within 6 months from your visa interview date, then you only need PCC from passport office, otherwise you need to get one from surat and from ahmedabad and 1 from passport office. hope this helps. BTW, http://mumbai.usconsulate.gov/ivpolicecertificates.html is link to mumbai consulate website. you can read more on that page. dont get it too early. start around after you have sent in your packet 3 to the embassy. anyways gluck..

Ok Thanks for the information. yes I know about the 6 month Passport PCC requirement. My spouse's passport will be beyond the 6 month limit when we get the interview (somewhere in oct/nov i believe). So was asking about the pcc requirement whether its just from last place of residence or from all places stayed after 16 years....

hello kss,

okay. I believe that you will need local PCC from both ahmedabad and surat. I was under impression that if passport was issues more than 6 months b4 yr visa interview, then one needs to get PCC from local district police stations where they have stayed after turning 16. Anyone please correct me if I am wrong.

Not to scare anyone but just fyi....especially for those going through New Delhi but I just wanted to give you a heads up to be prepared.

My husband's passport was reissued in Feb of this year.. his interview was in June. Therefore we figured we were within the six month only needing PCC from passport office rule. However, as I'm sure you're aware, the paperwork that we fill out says that we need clearance from from every place the beneficiary has stayed since the age of 16. Thankfully the Indian consulates don't normally go by this rule. I found this out by emailing the Delhi Embassy to inquire about which pcc's would be needed and how could my husband obtain his from Saudi where he worked more than 10 years ago. They responded with the same thing Soni1952 posted. HOWEVER when we got into hubby's interview, one of the first things the interviewer asked was where his police clearance certificate from Saudi was. We explained to her that according to the DOS reprocity table that Saudi doesn't issue pcc's to non residents and furthermore, we had been told that we didn't need any pcc other than the one passport office. The interviewer said no that was not the case and asked to see a copy of the email I received from their office stating the opposite. Thank God I had it with me and gave it to her. Fortunately she said, " we have been known to make mistakes" and asked if she could keep the email for hubby's file. Of course we said yes.

Again, I'm not trying to scare anyone or add one more thing to worry about, I just want you to be aware of what could be asked. It's confusing because the DOS wants one thing and some countries do abide by it but the Indian Consulates usually only want a pcc from the most recent residence and passport office. Good luck everyone.

Hello! I will add here our experience too.

My husband lived most of his live in a village in East Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh. Then he lived 2 years in Hyderabad working. He got his passport in Visakhapatnam (in Visakhapatnam district) because it was nearer to his village than the local East Godavari district passport office.

He got the PCC from Visakhapatnam passport office with no problem (the passport was issued over 6 months ago, when he got it). Then he got the PCC from the local village police station. When he tried to get a PCC in Hyderabad, because he had been residing there 2 years, they would not issue it because he could not prove his residency (he had been staying with friends so no lease statement, no bank account because he only had one in his home village, etc.). Still, he was issued the visa with no problem.

It is confusing what exactly they want and I think it is better to get as many PCCs as possible, meaning from where one has lived before in India and abroad (if possible), just in case.
