Don't tell me they still have rent control in NYC??

Not only NYC - other cities as well. San Francisco, to name one.

We have rent control in parts of Hollywood, Santa Monica and other places, though it ain't what it used to be.

New York, San Francisco, Washington, DC, Santa Monica, Berkeley, West Hollywood, & many small towns in New Jersey.

Well, I think it's pretty obvious that your friend's experience is not what the average person pays, just like the average person in New York doesn't pay $1.2 million to live in the lower East Side.

I know I used to pay £400 pw for my flat in London, which is about 4x what I'm paying

now for my lovely rent-controlled apartment in the village.

Don't tell me they still have rent control in NYC??

Dude, your signature is awesome. Never really watched it before. Truly great! Hahahaha.

I paid far more for my flat in NYC & I got it rent controlled in 1998. My London rent was half of my NYC rent & had a garden.

Stop defending London - it's fuсking EXPENSIVE! In fact, it's the second most expensive city

in the world! New York is #15, in case you were wondering.

"It would set you back £1,950 a month in London to rent a luxury two-bedroom unfurnished

apartment, compared with £840 in Dublin, £1,311 in Paris and £908 in Rome. "

I'm not defending it, I'm simply telling you what I personally paid in NYC & London. And I'm disputing your ONE EXAMPLE from TWELVE YEARS AGO of a London flat price....! Seems simple, no?

In London, correct?

You never answered Robin, how did you get your NYC flat?

I'm telling YOU that I paid twice as much money for a tiny LES studio (in 2003) vs. an apt with a garden in London, in Battersea, in 2005 for HALF that.

Why can't you get it?

:secret: I can read! :bonk:

Have you ever even been to London? I'm going off my own personal experience of living in both NYC & London. And I'm telling you it's cheaper in London.

A friend of mine had a studio in South Kensington for which he paid - if memory serves me right -

£1,200 per week. That was back in '95 - think it's cheaper today?

That was an extreme example of what a luxury apartment costs in South Ken.

I never said I paid £1,200 pw for mine.

London is expensive - but I do find that relatively speaking things wind up the same between life there and here in LA when you factor in a lot things like healthcare, the cost of running a car, etc. I'd go back in a heartbeat with the right job offer - I had a great life there (it was hardly "making do") and there's no reason to believe it wouldn't be the same again.

Anyways, if I was basing my decision about where to live solely about money it would have to be Asia - low taxes and I could have a maid.

As was your statement that somewhere 'nice' costs 500-600 a week. Or that a share in Tooting Bec for 60 a week.

There are pleny of inbetweens Mark. And we're still waiting to hear you admit you got grandfathered into your cheap NYC flat....

You never answered Robin, how did you get your NYC flat?

Correct.

I paid $3,500 in brokers fees.

I'm telling YOU that I paid twice as much money for a tiny LES studio (in 2003) vs. an apt with a garden in London, in Battersea, in 2005 for HALF that.

Why can't you get it?

I get it. London is so much better.
