Importing a vehicle after living in US over one year

I brought my Canadian made car down to the US a little over a year ago, and I am trying to now legally import it. I NOW see that this is not advisable. My question is, once I do all the rigamarole around getting the vehicle in compliance with US standards (IF I can do this), will it be a problem when I show up at the border and try to import the vehicle after being in the US over one year? I see myself standing there, with the US official saying I cannot drive my car through to the US! YIKES!

Sometimes you can show up to a local port and import from there, rather than having to cross from the border.
