Chicken pox question - Medical

Hello!

I am based in the UK and on the email for the Medical appointment it says that if you have proof of chicken pox as a child to bring this in. I did have chicken pox as a child but this was never reported to the doctors by my parents as it wasn’t serious.

Do they provide a blood test on the day/this doesn’t matter? I’m slightly worried I’ll need to get a blood test from my doctor’s beforehand to show immunity? Could someone let me know their experience with the medical and chicken pox?

Thank you

I was same. At medical in London they do a visual check to see if you have scars from chicken pox (I didn’t as it was 35 yrs ago!) so they do a blood test and you get results a few days later. If you have the immunity antibodies from that, no further action needed. If not, you need to arrange a vax, locally.

nothing to worry about either way though.

Thank you so much for this! Was the blood test at an additional cost or included in the price? I was worried I had to scramble to get a blood test from my doctors prior to my app!

Myself, spouse and two teenage children had medicals in London last year, they never even asked us about it. They just ticked the 'Varicella History' box and that was it.

I think they used to do this but it’s changed now - she even said to me they could do that before but that the US was tightening up on this (unless they didn’t believe me!!)

How strange, I wonder if it depends on the doctor. Ours were only 6 months ago ish, and none of us were even asked about it, both doctors just ticked the box to say we had a 'varicella history' even though it wasn't on our medical summaries. I had a photo of my son with spots on his face all ready to go and everything. 😂

Our was about the same time, really odd. We had two different doctors see the 4 of us, neither did any checking at all.

Hi all,

Thanks for your replies!

Just an update, had my medical yesterday and the nurse asked me if I'd had chicken pox, I said yes but I'd never been to the doctors about it and she said she'd take my word for it, as most people in the UK had chicken pox as a kid and never went to the docs! So all good :)
